インド2日目。街の綺麗さは宗教と関係がある？
インド2日目。昨日はデーリーで宿がなかったけれど、まあOK。朝からインド中から電化製品を買いに来るというインドの有名な電気街ネループレイスに行ってみた。
以前働いていたジャカルタにも同じような電気街はあったけれど、ここは色々とすごい。というのが、ビルの中がゴミだらけ。まるで廃墟。上に行けば行くほど廃墟、そんなところで仕事をしている。ビルの中、至る所ゴミだらけなのだけれど、なぜか丹念に階段の途中の消火栓だけを拭いているおじさんがいたり。めちゃめちゃ不思議。
入り口は人一人入れるかほどのスペースだけれど、奥へ奥へと店が続いていてまったく先が見えないお店があったり、お店もかなりバラエティに富んでいる。もう本当に、所狭しと様々なお店があって、これで利益でるの？？いう不思議なお店が沢山、でも、これで利益が出るという。なんとも不思議なことだ。今まで中国、インドネシア、ベトナム、ネパール、チベット、色々とマーケットを見てきたけれど、電気街としてはインドのネループレイスが一番カオスかも。
このカオス感。悪の巣窟、中は治外法権といわれていた香港の九龍城はもっとだったのだろうか。やはりぜひ九龍城が存在していた時に、行ってみたかった。
ネループレイスの後は近くの寺院までウォーキング。芝生も素晴らしい公園も沢山あったのだけれど、驚くべきことにその綺麗な芝生の上がゴミだらけ。なので、読書なんかしながら休日を過ごすなんてもっての他。なんてもったいない。デーリー。25年前と比べ、明らかに発展はしているものの、街の汚さは変わらず？なんか、そこもすごいな。
夕方早々にデーリーを後にし、国内線でインドのちょうど真ん中ほどにある都市ナグプールへ。ナグプールには18時に到着。ここはインド仏教徒1億5000万人の頂点に立つ“日本人僧”佐々井上人がいらっしゃる町。事前に白井さんの本”世界が驚くニッポンのお坊さん 佐々井秀嶺、インドに笑う”と、IT起業家から突然出家された龍光さんの記事を読んでいたので、ぜひ来たかった町。
インドに来る前、龍光さんにダメ元で龍光さんにインドのオススメの場所をお伺いするメッセージを送るとすぐにご返信いただく。ネループレイスなどおすすめを教えていただき、さらにナグプールにも興味があることをお伝えすると、さらにすぐさま、佐々井上人の秘書でもあるアミットさんをご紹介いただいた。ナグプールでは、そんな事前にやりとりさせていただいアミットさんがお子さんと一緒に空港に向かいに来ていただいていた。まずはアミットさんのご自宅で親戚やご兄弟にご挨拶。その後この晩はお母様のご自宅に泊めていただくことに。何から何まで至れり尽くせり。
ナグプールの空港から市内へで驚いたのが町の綺麗さ。デーリーは至る所ゴミだらけだったのに、ナグプールはまったくゴミがない。街によってもこんなにも違うものなのだ。そういえば、ここは40％が仏教徒の街、宗教は街の綺麗さに関係があるのだろうか？

Day 2 in India. In the morning we went to Nehru Place, India’s famous electronics district. People from all over India come here to buy electrical goods.
There was a similar electronics city in Jakarta where I used to work, but this place is amazing in many ways. The buildings are covered in rubbish. It is like an abandoned building. The higher you go, the more deserted it is. The buildings are covered with rubbish everywhere, but for some reason people are carefully wiping down the fire hydrants in the middle of the stairs. It was very strange.
The entrance is a small room, just big enough for one person, but the shops go all the way to the back of the building, and you can barely see the end of the building. There are so many strange shops that you wonder if they are profitable. I have been to markets in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Nepal, Tibet and many others, but Nehru Place in India is probably the most chaotic and electronic.
That sense of chaos. I wonder if Kowloon Castle in Hong Kong, which was said to be a cesspool of evil extraterritoriality inside, was more so. I would have loved to have visited Kowloon Castle when it still existed.
After Nehru Place we walked to the nearby temple. There were many parks with beautiful lawns, but surprisingly the beautiful lawns were covered with rubbish. Clearly more developed than 25 years ago, but still as dirty as ever?
We left Delhi in the evening and took a domestic flight to Nagpur, a city in the middle of India. We arrived in Nagpur at 6 p.m. This is the home town of Mr Shuho Sasai, a “Japanese monk” and leader of India’s 150 million Buddhists. After reading Mr Shirai’s book “The World’s Surprised Japanese Monk, Shuho Sasai, Laughing in India” and an article about the suddenly ordained IT entrepreneur, Ryukoh, I was eager to visit this city.
Before coming to India, I sent a message to Mr Ryukoh asking for his recommendations of places to visit in India and he replied immediately. He recommended Nehru Place and other places, but when I mentioned that I was also interested in Nagpur, he immediately introduced me to Amit, who is also Shonin Sasai’s secretary. In Nagpur, Mr Amit, whom we had contacted in advance, came to the airport to meet us with his children. We first went to Mr Amit’s brother’s house and greeted his relatives and siblings. Then we were invited to spend the night at his mother’s house. We were very grateful and everything was well arranged.
From the airport in Nagpur to the city, I was amazed at the cleanliness of the city. While Delhi was littered everywhere, Nagpur was completely free of rubbish. I had no idea that cities could be so different. Does the cleanliness of a city have anything to do with religion?
