一人の人間が、どれほどの価値を人類にもたらすことができるのか、と考えることがある。

例えば、アインシュタイン。彼の発見がなければ、現代のテクノロジーの多くは存在しなかったかもしれない。そう考えると、彼一人の価値は、人類1億人分にも相当するのではないか、とすら思う。

そして、現代に目を向けた時、「彼もまた、そういう存在なのかもしれない」と感じる人物がいる。イーロン・マスクだ。

彼を見ていると、一人で100人分の人生を、いや、世界を変えるような人間の100人分の人生を、同時に生きているように見える。

これは決して大袈裟な話ではない。最近、彼の仕事ぶりがわかる、いくつかの情報に触れて、その思いを強くした。

一つは、イーロン・マスク自身のツイートに書かれていた、とある週末のスケジュールだ。

金曜の夜はロボット開発で夜更かしし、深夜便で移動。土曜の早朝に到着すると、昼は子供たちと過ごし、午後は丸ごとAIチップ設計の技術レビュー。月曜にはデータセンターの現場を視察し、また真夜中に出発。その後は最大12時間にも及ぶ連続会議…。

これは、強烈なビジョンを持った創業者にしかできない、猛烈なリーダーシップだ。

そして、その猛烈な仕事が向かう先は、世界のあり方を根底から変えようとする壮大なビジョンだ。

彼のトンネル掘削会社「Boring Company」は、単に速いドリルを作っているわけではない。交通を地下の三次元空間に移し、地上の渋滞をゼロにし、都市を歩行者のための快適な空間へと解放しようとしている。

この常人離れした仕事量と、世界のOSを書き換えようとするほどのビジョン。

この二つを理解すると、テスラが提案している彼への100兆円を超える報酬パッケージの話も、全く違って見えてくる。

その内容は、「会社の価値を劇的に上げることに成功した場合にのみ、報酬を株で受け取る」という、これ以上ないほどフェアなものだ。

凄まじい仕事量で自らを追い込み、壮大なビジョンで世界を牽引し、その結果責任を自分自身が最も厳しく負う。

アインシュタインが宇宙の法則を解き明かした理論物理学者であるのに対し、マスクは物理学を応用して人類の未来を実装するエンジニアだ。分野は違う。

しかし、一人の人間が持つエネルギーが、人類全体の未来にどれだけの影響を与えるか、というスケールで見た時。

イーロン・マスクもまた、歴史に名を刻む、特別な存在なのだと、改めて思わずにはいられない。

If Einstein is Worth 100 Million People to Humanity, How Many is Elon Musk Worth?

Sometimes, I think about how much value a single human being can bring to humanity.

Take Einstein, for example. Without his discoveries, much of our modern technology might not exist. When you think about it that way, it feels as though his value alone might be equivalent to 100 million people.

And when I turn my eyes to the modern era, there is a figure who makes me feel, “Perhaps he, too, is such a presence.” That person is Elon Musk.

Watching him, it seems as though he is living the lives of 100 people—no, the lives of 100 world-changing people—all at the same time.

This is no exaggeration. My conviction has only grown stronger after coming across a few pieces of information that give a glimpse into his work ethic.

One is a weekend schedule that Elon Musk himself wrote about in a tweet.

He worked late into Friday night on robotics development, then took a red-eye flight. Arriving at his destination early Saturday morning, he had lunch with his children, then spent the entire afternoon in a deep technical review of an AI chip. On Monday, he inspected a data center construction site, only to depart again at midnight for a series of back-to-back meetings that could last up to 12 hours…

This is a fierce form of leadership that only a founder with a powerful vision can execute.

And the destination of all this fierce work is a grand vision that seeks to fundamentally change the way the world works.

His Boring Company is not just making a faster drill. It is trying to move traffic into a 3D subterranean space to eliminate congestion on the surface, liberating our cities into more pleasant spaces for pedestrians and cyclists.

When you understand this superhuman work ethic and a vision on the scale of rewriting the world’s operating system, the story about the 100-trillion-yen-plus compensation package being proposed by Tesla starts to look completely different.

The terms are such that he only receives his stock-based compensation if he succeeds in dramatically increasing the company’s value. It is the fairest possible arrangement.

To drive himself with a relentless work ethic, to lead the world with a grand vision, and to bear the ultimate responsibility for the results himself.

Einstein was a theoretical physicist who revealed the laws of the universe, whereas Musk is an engineer who applies physics to implement the future of humanity. Their fields are different.

However, when viewed on the scale of how much impact the energy of a single human can have on the entire future of humankind, I cannot help but be reminded that Elon Musk, too, is a special figure who will be etched in history.
