若田光一氏がAxiom Spaceを選んだ理由と日本民間宇宙開発への期待
元JAXA宇宙飛行士の若田光一氏がAxiom Spaceへ2024年4月に転職された。大変幸運なことに自分はかつて、山崎直子さんのスペースシャトル打ち上げの際に、山崎大地さんのお招きでヒューストンで若田さんに会う機会をいただいたことがある。
若田さんは、日本を代表する宇宙飛行士の一人として素晴らしいキャリアを築いてきた、類まれな宇宙飛行士。 若田さんは、ロボットアームのオペレーターやISSのクルーリーダーを務めるなど、リーダーシップを発揮。 特に、国際宇宙ステーション（ISS）に4回滞在した唯一の日本人宇宙飛行士なのだ。
そんな若田氏、現在はAxiom Spaceのアジア太平洋地域の最高技術責任者（CTO）として、新たな役割を担い、民間宇宙開発に貢献されている。
Axiom Spaceは最近、プラダと協力して新しい宇宙服を開発したことでも話題の企業だ。国の宇宙飛行士が民間へ転職すること自体は珍しくないが、若田氏はこれまでの豊富な経験を活かし、宇宙開発の次のステップに進みたいという思いから、Axiom Spaceへの参加を決めたよう。
いままでの若田宇宙飛行士の経験を民間企業でどう活かしていくのかが、とっても興味深い。
- 地球低軌道（LEO）における民間活動のリーダーシップ 若田飛行士がAxiom Spaceを選んだ理由の一つは、LEO（低軌道）における民間主導の活動が宇宙開発の未来において重要であると考えたからだということ。長年の宇宙飛行士としての経験が、商業宇宙ステーションの建設や宇宙飛行士の訓練、技術の進歩に大いに役立つことだろう。なおAxiom Spaceは、すでに宇宙ステーションモジュールを開発・製造しており、これらが今後数年でISSにドッキングする予定だ。
- 民間宇宙ミッションにおける実績 Axiom Spaceは、SpaceX社のファルコン9ロケットを使って複数の民間宇宙ミッションを成功させている。若田飛行士ならば、Axiomでの自身の役割が、従来の宇宙飛行士としての活動を超え、技術、管理、そしてリーダーシップを発揮できるはず。
- 生涯にわたる宇宙飛行への献身 現役として有人宇宙飛行に生涯関わり続けたいという強い願望をお持ちの若田宇宙飛行士。Axiom Spaceは、この生涯にわたる志を実現するための理想的な環境を提供しており、これからも若田宇宙飛行士自身が、宇宙開発において深く関与することが期待されている。
- 日本への事業拡大の可能性 Axiom Spaceは日本にまだ支社を持っていないものの、アジア太平洋地域での事業展開を視野に入れている。若田氏がアジア太平洋地域の最高技術責任者（CTO）として参画していることで、日本市場との連携も期待されており、将来的には日本での民間宇宙事業が活性化される可能性もある。
若田光一氏のAxiom Spaceへの転職は、日本と世界の民間宇宙開発に新たな道を開く重要なステップだ。若田氏のような人物が民間宇宙開発に関わることで、日本も新たな挑戦を始め、未来の宇宙開発に向けた一歩を踏み出せるような土台が間違いなくできてくるはずだ！

Former JAXA Astronaut Koichi Wakata’s Move to Axiom Space and Expectations for Japan’s Private Space Development
Koichi Wakata, a former JAXA astronaut, made headlines in April 2024 with his transition to Axiom Space. Interestingly, I once had the opportunity to meet Wakata in Houston during Naoko Yamazaki’s Space Shuttle launch, thanks to an invitation from Daichi Yamazaki.
Wakata is an exceptional astronaut, having built an outstanding career as one of Japan’s leading space explorers. He demonstrated leadership through his role as the operator of the robotic arm and as crew leader on the ISS. Notably, he is the only Japanese astronaut to have stayed aboard the International Space Station (ISS) four times.
Now, Wakata is contributing to private space development as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Asia-Pacific region at Axiom Space.
Axiom Space, a company recently in the spotlight for developing new space suits in collaboration with Prada, is an exciting place to work. While it’s not unusual for national astronauts to transition to private sectors, Wakata chose Axiom Space to apply his extensive experience to the next phase of space development.
It will be fascinating to see how Wakata’s experience as an astronaut will be utilized in the private sector.
Leadership in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Private Activities
