I was given the opportunity to speak for an hour at my daughter’s school on the subject of ‘How to live (to create your own future)’.
I have spoken on a similar topic before at Aoyama Gakuin University and for working people, but this topic is really difficult. If one’s future is decided in junior high school, it is very fortunate. To be honest, I even think it is a fiction. I wonder if there really are junior high school students like Seiji Amazawa in the Ghibli film ‘Ears to the Future’ who have something they want to do that is too attractive and dazzling even for an adult. If they exist, they are probably few and far between in Japan.
In fact, there were many children who did not know what they wanted to do or what their dreams were, but I think that is normal. The same goes for adults. You can see it very clearly in the bookshops. Books for adults about creating their own future are published regularly every year. So it is always a difficult problem for adults too.
Nevertheless, I spoke for the one hour I was given in the hope that it would give people a chance to think about their own lives, if only a little. I don’t know if my talk really resonated with the junior high school students, and I may have spoken in a rather biased and extreme way, but I would be happy if the children who listened to me this time had the chance to think for themselves and not just believe what adults, their parents or their teachers say. Even if there is only one such student, I would be more than happy if he or she could be inspired to think for themselves.
