高城剛さんのメルマガを読んでいて、なるほどと思う言葉があった。

「もう英語は要らない」と言う人は、10年後、英語をコミュニケーションで上手に使えている人の下で働くことになるかもしれない。

いまAI翻訳は本当に便利だ。

海外のニュースも論文も読める。英語のメールも書ける。海外ブランドを調べたり、仕入れ先と連絡を取ったりするのも、以前とは比べものにならないくらい楽になった。

自分自身、毎日使っている。

昔なら英語が読めないだけで入れなかった情報の世界に、いまは簡単に入っていける。

これは間違いなく、素晴らしい変化だ。

でも、高城さんの言葉を読んで思った。

人と人との間には、まだ別の壁がある。

仕事でも旅行でも、大事な話は正式なメールや会議の中だけで進むわけではない。

食事の席だったり、展示会の通路だったり、移動中だったりする。

「最近どう？」

「この新作、どう思う？」

そんな、どうでもいいような会話の積み重ねで、人は仲良くなる。

仕事の相談が来たり、誰かを紹介してもらったりするのも、案外そういうところからだったりする。

もちろんAI翻訳を使えば、意味は伝わる。

でも、翻訳アプリを取り出した瞬間、会話は少しだけ止まる。

相手の冗談にその場で笑ったり、すぐに言い返したりするのとは、やっぱり少し違う。

だから、これから必要になる英語は、昔とは違うのかもしれない。

難しい単語を何万語も覚えることでも、文法を完璧にすることでもない。

間違っていてもいい。

分からなければ聞き返せばいい。

とにかく相手の目を見て、自分の言葉で会話を続ける。それくらいでいい。

難しい文章を読むのはAIに任せればいい。正確な英文を書くのもAIに手伝ってもらえばいい。

でも、自分の好きなものについて話す。「また会おう」と自分の声で言う。

そこは、やっぱりまだ自分でやった方がいい気がする。

AIがあるから英語はいらない、ではない。

むしろAIがあるから、完璧な英語を目指さなくてもよくなった。

調べるときはAIを使う。書くときもAIを使う。そして最後は、自分で話す。

いまのところ、それが一番なのかもしれない。

Since AI Can Translate Everything, Do We Still Need English?

I came across something in Takashiro-san’s newsletter that stayed with me.

People who say “English isn’t necessary anymore” may, in ten years, find themselves working under someone who uses it well in conversation.

AI translation really is convenient now.

Foreign news, academic papers, emails — all manageable. Looking into overseas brands, keeping in touch with suppliers — it’s incomparably easier than it used to be.

I use it myself, every day.

Information that was once simply out of reach because of the language barrier is now easy to access.

That is, without question, a good thing.

But reading Takashiro-san’s words made me think.

Between people, there’s still a different kind of wall.

Whether in business or travel, important things don’t only happen in formal emails or meetings.

They happen at dinner. In the aisles of a trade show. On the way somewhere.

“How have you been?”

“What do you think of this new piece?”

It’s that kind of small, seemingly inconsequential exchange that makes people feel close.

Work opportunities and introductions often come from those moments too, more than you’d expect.

AI translation can carry the meaning, of course.

But the moment you reach for a translation app, the conversation pauses — just a little.

It’s not quite the same as laughing at someone’s joke on the spot, or firing something back without thinking.

So maybe the English that matters going forward is different from before.

Not tens of thousands of difficult words. Not flawless grammar.

It’s fine to make mistakes.

If you don’t understand, ask.

Just keep looking the other person in the eye and keep the conversation going in your own words. That’s enough.

Let AI handle the complex reading. Let AI help with the precise writing.

But talking about what you care about. Saying “let’s meet again” in your own voice.

That still feels like something to do yourself.

It’s not that AI makes English unnecessary.

If anything, AI means you no longer have to aim for perfect English.

Use AI when you’re researching. Use it when you’re writing. And then, at the end, speak for yourself.

For now, that might be the best way.
