Addiction to betrayal and obsession with fun, “self-imposed schizophrenic pleasure”.
I have recently become addicted to Apple TV+. Today I watched ‘The John le Carré Memoirs’ by the former MI6 novelist.
What are the pleasures of life these days? What do people of a certain age find joy in? In this documentary I found something completely unexpected.
A story about Kim Philby, a member of the ‘Cambridge Five’, a Soviet spy network made up of people from the British upper class, and a central figure in it, who was even considered for the post of Director of MI6, but defected to the Soviet Union when he was discovered to be a double agent.

Addiction to betrayal and obsession with fun, “a self-imposed schizophrenic pleasure”.
There is always a duality. The opposite of the apparent self. Sensual pleasure. Always trying your luck and surviving. It’s a sense of playing both sides, between an addiction to betrayal and an obsession with pleasure. I am at the centre of the world and I play with the world. Ideology becomes irrelevant. At first, yes, but it was an addiction to betrayal. The feeling of being at the centre of the world fuels vanity.

How is this possible? Is it a thrill to go where the unencumbered go?
