I Wrote About Letting Go. The Next Day I Was in Hong Kong.

Yesterday I wrote about letting go. Today I’m in Hong Kong.

Once a year, I come here to renew a company I have registered in the city. It’s dormant — nothing is really happening with it. Still, once a year, I have to make the trip.

The procedure itself is nothing much. Sign some papers, pay the fees, keep it going another year. That’s all.

But every year, around this time, I find myself thinking about all kinds of things.

This company has been sleeping for years now. I must have started it with some intention, but time passed and nothing came of it. I can’t quite bring myself to close it down, so once a year I come to do the paperwork and nothing else.

Maybe I should let it go. I do think that sometimes.

But then I feel like there are cases where holding onto something still means something. Things you don’t use but can’t release — maybe there’s something left in them after all. Whether it’s attachment or possibility, I honestly can’t tell.

When you let go of what you don’t need, what you do need comes into view. That’s what I had just written.

And the very next day I’m in Hong Kong, filing paperwork for a company that hasn’t stirred in years.

There’s something about writing that and then immediately being confronted with exactly that question. Is this one of the things I should let go of, or isn’t it?

No conclusion comes. Every year I come here, think the same things, do the paperwork, and go home.

Maybe that in itself is a kind of rhythm. Coming here once a year, making space for this question.

Not to reach an answer. A procedure for continuing to ask.

Thinking of it that way, it doesn’t feel so bad.

The city is the same as always. Crowded, dense, everything mixed together. The pace here is completely different from Japan, and every time I arrive I notice something in my head loosening a little.

The dormant company, the question of whether to let it go — somewhere inside the sound of the trains, none of it seems to matter much. There’s only the Hong Kong air.

I have a feeling I’ll be back again next year. Same paperwork, same thoughts, same inconclusion.

That seems fine, for today at least.
