「Human in the Loop」と「Human on the Loop」
「Human in the Loop」
最近、「Human on the Loop」という考え方を知った。
on。
onの視点。
Human on the Loop。
inからonへ。

“Human in the Loop” and “Human on the Loop”
The idea is simple enough: AI makes a decision, a person checks it, then the cycle continues. The human is built into that loop.
When I first heard it, it made sense. But thinking it over, isn’t that just being AI’s busy assistant? Once you’re inside the loop, you can’t get out. There’s always another task waiting.
Then I came across a different framing: “Human on the Loop.”
On. You stand outside the loop and take in the whole picture. Not absorbed in it — above it. You step down when a decision needs to be made, then step back up.
That struck me as the better way.
And I realized, at the same time, that I’m still very much in.
Take a typical morning. I open email, reply, move to the next task. Before I know it, it’s noon. Even with AI tools, I have the feeling I’ve become part of the processing. Things were supposed to get easier, but the work doesn’t shrink. If anything, it feels like it grows.
When tools get faster, you can handle more — and somehow end up busier.
This isn’t something I read somewhere. It’s where I am right now.
The on perspective.
It’s not about stepping back from everything, or slacking off. It’s about separating what can run without you from what only you can do. Getting that sorting right. That’s all it is, I think.
But it’s hard.
When work comes in, I tend to just do it myself. I feel uneasy if I don’t check. I worry something will slip if I delegate. And gradually, being indispensable starts to feel comfortable. The sense of being needed gets tangled up with being busy, and you start mistaking that for a full life.
I do sometimes wonder if that’s actually true.
Running an eyeglass shop, I notice I’m good at focusing on the person in front of me. But building something that delivers the same experience even on days I’m not there — that’s a different problem entirely. Until I manage that, I have no choice but to stay inside the loop.
Human on the Loop.
For now, I’m wondering if I can carve out time — even once a week — to step outside and see the whole picture. That might be enough to start.
From in to on. One letter. The difference is bigger than it sounds.
