Spending More Time Deciding “Is This Right” — AI Was Supposed to Make Things Easier, but My Head Is Full
Today I spent the whole day wrestling with AI.
Looking back at the end of the day, it feels like I didn’t do anything. Just sat in front of my computer and iPad, talking to AI.
And yet my head is exhausted.
How can I feel this tired when I didn’t do anything?
When I think about it, though, I wasn’t doing nothing. I was thinking, constantly.
Today I was testing how much of my daily work I could hand off to AI — starting with photo editing for the eyewear shop.
Glasses photos look better with a white background. But make it too white, and you lose the color of the frame itself.
The dark parts and light parts of a tortoiseshell pattern — I want those to come through properly.
Photos of customers who visit the shop need different treatment depending on whether they’re going on the website or being handed to the person themselves.
It’s the same with writing.
The text is tidy. Nothing wrong with it. But something is off.
I look at what the AI produced, sense that it’s wrong, figure out what’s wrong, and try to explain it again.
I kept repeating that all day.
The time I spend manually adjusting brightness or writing sentences word by word has gone down.
But in its place, the time I spend deciding “is this right” has gone up.
And AI delivers the next version immediately.
Once something is corrected, I look again. Think again. Explain again.
When you ask a person to do something, there’s time while you wait for it to come back. You can work on something else.
With AI, that gap is short.
Before I knew it, I’d been making judgments nonstop.
Something I read today — written by a person who uses AI to create educational videos and music visuals — touched on something similar.
You can now use AI to build the very tools you use to create things.
So human time ends up being spent deciding what to make and which version is better.
The scale is different, but what I was doing today felt a little like that.
Though I have to be honest — not all of today’s tiredness came from using my head in a good way.
Logging in. Granting permissions. Where did that downloaded file go. Does this AI know what I told the other one earlier.
A fair amount of time got stuck on things like that.
That part I’d genuinely like to reduce.
It’s not that I want to get better at operating AI tools.
I want to hand off the work I do every day, and have more time for what comes after.
So I don’t want to close out today as “a day I pushed through trying to get good at AI.”
Can I avoid explaining everything from scratch again tomorrow? Can the next photo be handled with the same finishing approach I settled on today?
Getting to that point is when I think I’ll actually be able to say things have gotten easier.
People sometimes say that AI causes humans to think less.
But I came across something Masayoshi Son of SoftBank said — that AI will actually make humans think more, not less.
At least for me today, that was exactly how it felt.
Rather than moving my hands, I kept being asked, over and over, what I actually care about.
The color of the glasses over the whiteness of the background.
The temperature of what I want to say over polished text.
Having time left over at the end over simply being more convenient.
That’s what I kept turning over in my mind today.
That said — I was supposed to use the time AI frees up to prepare for a trip to Mars, and instead I spent the whole day fighting with AI.
I hope tomorrow I’ll be able to hand off a little more than I could today.
…And so, undeterred, I’ll be talking to AI again tomorrow.
