The Mac I’d Been Waiting For Finally Arrived — and Now I’m Not Sure I Need It

For a while, I was planning to buy a Mac mini. Compact, capable enough, and if I maxed out the memory, I figured it would serve me well for years.

Then I started thinking about using AI to fully automate photo processing and video editing. That shifted things a little.

With a Mac mini, even at maximum memory, I might eventually hit a ceiling. A Mac Studio — with room for more — seemed like the better call. So I decided to wait for the new one.

It was finally announced. The performance looks solid. There’s enough headroom in both memory and storage to work with, depending on budget. I was ready to buy.

Then OpenAI released Dots, and suddenly I wasn’t sure about anything.

Dots, put simply, is an AI that handles work on your behalf.

ChatGPT, up until now, has been something you go to — you ask it questions, you give it tasks. Dots is different. You hand it work, and it keeps going while you’re off doing something else. It also has its own dedicated computer in the cloud. Even if your Mac is powered off, the AI keeps working.

That’s when I found myself wondering: what exactly would be the point of buying a high-performance Mac?

The reason I wanted to max out the memory wasn’t just to make my computer faster. It was to have an environment ready — one capable of handling as much as possible when AI becomes more capable.

Take the eyewear product photos I shoot every week, sometimes dozens at a time. Import them, adjust the brightness and color, cut them out, standardize the sizes, save everything. Or the footage I shoot on an Insta360 — hours of it, sometimes. Pick out what’s usable, edit, export, organize. I’ve been hoping to hand all of that over to AI eventually.

More memory, a stronger GPU, more storage. That was the thinking.

Dots shook that assumption a little.

If AI is doing the work on a computer in the cloud, maybe my Mac doesn’t need to be that powerful.

Of course, not everything can happen in the cloud right now. For processing large volumes of photos and video locally, the Mac’s performance still matters.

But what I keep thinking about isn’t now. It’s a few years from now.

“Sort all the eyewear photos from yesterday’s shoot and get them listed on the product pages.”

“Go through the travel footage and put together something good from the highlights.”

Just saying something like that — and having the AI take care of the rest. That might not be far off.

When that happens, where will the processing actually take place? On the Mac sitting in front of me? On the AI’s cloud computer? Or will the AI quietly decide which to use, depending on the task?

If the cloud handles everything, then the Mac at my desk doesn’t need to be especially powerful. On the other hand, if the AI is operating locally — working through large batches of photos and video on my machine — then more power is still better.

There’s something else that’s been on my mind. AI is moving fast. Very fast.

Even if I buy a high-performance Mac today, the way AI actually works might look completely different in a few years. Buying a computer used to mean: more performance equals more you can do. I’m not sure that’s still quite true. It’s possible that what the AI can do will matter far more than what the computer can do.

I do want a new Mac. My M2 Max is still holding up well, but a second machine — one I could leave running all the time — would be useful.

The question is whether I actually need a Mac Studio with maxed-out memory, the way I originally planned. Or whether it makes more sense to buy something more modest now and see where AI goes over the next few years.

The Mac Studio I’d been waiting for is finally here. Under normal circumstances, I think I would have bought it without hesitating.

Instead, AI getting smarter has somehow made it harder to justify buying a more powerful computer. There’s something a little strange about that.

It used to be that people operated computers. Now I’m thinking about having AI operate them for me. And somewhere further down that road, maybe people stop thinking about computing power much at all.

I waited so long for this Mac Studio. Now that it’s here, I genuinely don’t know whether to buy it.

Not long ago, Macs with more memory were hard to find at all. These are strange times to be trying to read.
