Elon Musk Has Done It Again — This Time, a Car That Flies

Elon Musk announced something extraordinary again.

The new Tesla Roadster.

Apparently, the car can spin through the air and land back on its tires.

It uses thrusters based on SpaceX technology to lift the body off the ground temporarily, flip or reorient itself in the air, then touch back down on its wheels. A next-generation vehicle, by any measure.

The prototype that was shown incorporates technology straight from the space industry — carbon-fiber-wrapped pressure vessels, powerful fans, diffusers — with no apparent restraint.

Musk himself said that success is not guaranteed, but that it will probably work. He’s reportedly planning to begin mass production in 2028, and has already collected $50,000 (around 8 million yen) in deposits from prospective buyers in the US, Canada, and China.

This week, US stock markets were unsettled — inflation data, concerns about AI investment — and Musk’s own net worth reportedly fell by several billion dollars over just a few days.

And yet he seems completely unfazed by all of it, calmly placing his next piece of science fiction onto a real-world roadmap.

If you were thinking only about rationality or playing it safe, you wouldn’t build a car like this. You wouldn’t invest in it either.

But there he is, vaulting over the boundaries of common sense, dragging into view a future that used to exist only in movies — through the grinding accumulation of technical work and something that looks a lot like sheer, unreasonable will.

It’s as if he’s genuinely asking: does a car actually have to stay on the ground?

What I also find interesting is that SpaceX shows up here too. Technology from a rocket company, brought into a car. That kind of thinking can only come from someone leading both Tesla and SpaceX at once.

I noticed the same pattern when I was researching the AI power shortage a while back. If there isn’t enough electricity on the ground, put the data centers in space. And if you need rockets to do that, build those yourself too.

It’s the same logic here. To push the car further, don’t limit yourself to automotive technology. Bring in rocket technology.

Whatever happens in the markets, the horizon he’s looking at is further out.

He doesn’t explain the future. He shows it.

Most people would stop themselves — not practical enough, market too small, too risky. But he builds it anyway, gets it moving, and puts it in front of the entire world.

Watching him take something that would normally never be built and make it real — I find it genuinely stirring. It’s a reminder that the future tends to live somewhere along the extension of that kind of relentless, burning drive.
