The Future Arrived in My Mailbox
Today I found an interesting flyer in my mailbox.
It was a notice saying that a nearby building would be having its exterior inspected — by drone.
And the company doing it: Rakuten Drone Co., Ltd.
Huh. I didn’t know Rakuten was doing things like this.
Or rather — so we’ve finally reached that point.
I’d known for a while that drones were being used to inspect buildings. But this was the first time I’d actually received a notice saying it would be happening in my own neighborhood.
Living in Tokyo, I almost never see drones zipping around the city. So this caught me off guard a little.
Curious, I looked up Rakuten Drone. They’ve already conducted exterior wall surveys on more than 800 buildings across Japan. And since February of this year, they’ve been offering a service where AI analyzes footage captured by drones to automatically detect cracks and other damage in exterior walls.
So they’re quite far along.
When I think about it, building exterior inspections and drones are a natural fit. Workers don’t have to climb to dangerous heights. The need for scaffolding is reduced. Cameras can capture fine details up close. And then AI processes the images. Work that used to require people going to hazardous places is gradually being taken over by drones and AI.
This feels like a genuinely good use of technology.
But the most interesting thing this time wasn’t the technology itself. It was the fact that the notice had shown up in my mailbox.
Drone delivery. Self-driving cars. Flying vehicles. Robotic labor. I’ve read about all of these in the news, many times.
But knowing about something from the news and having it enter your daily life are, in the end, a little different.
This time, a company called Rakuten Drone is coming to inspect a building near my house. That’s all it is. But it felt as if technology that had only ever existed inside the news had suddenly come right up to my doorstep.
And what delivered that news wasn’t a cutting-edge app or an AI. It was a single sheet of paper in my mailbox.
That’s what I find kind of interesting.
Maybe the day when drones fly routinely through Tokyo’s skies is drawing a little closer, step by step.
When the inspection day comes, I think I’ll look up at the sky. There might be a view of Tokyo I’ve never quite seen before.
