When You Can Still Turn Back, You Can’t Stop Comparing

I came across that line recently, and it gave me pause.

When you’re starting something. When you haven’t fully committed yet.

Should I stay in this job, or try something else. Go deeper with this place I’ve built, or go abroad. Learn something new, or not.

At those moments, I keep looking back.

Maybe the other path would have been better. Maybe I should have chosen something safer. That person is already further along. Maybe I’m falling behind.

When you believe you can still turn back, you can’t settle into where you are. You’re walking your road while looking at the scenery on another one.

Of course, being able to turn back isn’t itself a bad thing. Sometimes stopping is the right call. It takes courage to leave a situation that was wrong for you. There’s no need to hold on to painful work or a painful relationship just because you tell yourself you can’t go back.

But when you’re simply not yet used to a decision you’ve made — and you keep one eye on the exit — your forward momentum scatters.

The road next to yours tends to look good.

The person who stayed at a company sees the freedom of someone who went independent. The person who went independent envies the stability of a salaried job. Someone living abroad starts to miss the convenience of Japan. Someone in Japan looks at life overseas and feels a pull toward it. A person who’s married envies the solitude another person has. A person on their own finds themselves drawn to the idea of a family.

The path you didn’t take always looks a little brighter. Probably because you’re not walking its difficult stretches every day. What you see is mostly the good scenery.

On your own road, there are days when things don’t go as you’d hoped. But the road beside you never seems to have rainy days. The comparison makes your own road look a little worse.

Moving forward takes a certain willingness not to look back too often. You don’t need to erase the way back entirely.

Just — take the time you spend looking at the road you didn’t choose, and put it into making the road you’re on more interesting. In work, instead of envying someone else’s shop, think about what only your shop can do. While traveling, instead of dwelling on the places you didn’t get to, walk a little deeper into the place you’re in. With something new you’ve started, rather than turning over what you didn’t begin, stay with what you did begin a little longer.

Choosing one road isn’t a rejection of the others. I think it means gathering your time and energy toward the place you’ve chosen right now.

Having a way back can be reassuring. But if that’s where your eyes keep going, you stop seeing what’s ahead.

Growing something takes time. A shop, a job, a field of study, a relationship with family — all of it builds slowly, a little each day. If you’re always measuring it against another option, you pull the seedling up before it’s had a chance to grow.

There will be days when another road looks better. Even so, today, I’ll move a little further down the one I’m on.

Stopping the comparison doesn’t mean closing your eyes to what others are doing. It means knowing other roads exist — and still choosing your own, again.

I think that’s probably what it comes down to.
