A Line from Chanel

There is a quote attributed to Coco Chanel that goes like this:

“I only drink champagne on two occasions: when I am in love, and when I am not.”

The moment I came across it, I thought: that’s clever.

All she’s really saying is that she drinks it all the time. But she doesn’t say that. Instead she offers “two occasions,” and leaves a small gap — just enough for the listener to smile.

“When I am in love, and when I am not.”

Simply by dividing it in two, it suddenly sounds like Chanel.

When I think about it, language is a strange thing. You can say the same thing in different ways, and the way you say it reveals something about who you are.

Looking at this line, I find myself thinking: there’s something appealing about a person who can express their own thoughts in their own words. It doesn’t require difficult language. Chanel’s line, after all, is quite simple.

In love.
Not in love.

Most people in the world fall into one or the other. She just placed champagne there. And yet it’s not the kind of thing you forget.

Memorizing other people’s memorable lines is one thing, but taking something you’ve lived through yourself and distilling it into a single phrase of your own — that seems worth trying.

At work. On a trip. Raising children. Growing older.

It would be interesting to accumulate a few such lines over time.

Someday, I’d like to find myself saying something like that — quietly, lightly — the kind of line that makes you smile and then stays with you a little longer than expected.
