“When your own initials are enough.”

“When your own initials are enough.”

I came across a line from Bottega Veneta recently.

“When your own initials are enough.”

Apparently it was an advertising slogan from the 1970s. I thought it was remarkably cool.

Bottega Veneta had been doing this from the beginning — expressing what the brand was through craft, materials, and the intrecciato weave rather than a prominent logo.

If you truly have confidence in yourself, you don’t need a large logo.

Your name is enough.

Or more than that — people recognize you without even needing the name. They just know it’s you.

That, I think, is the coolest thing of all.

But in reality, most of us aren’t there yet.

And that’s why people wear brands, I think.

A brand carries value beyond quality alone. It plays the role of giving you a small lift in confidence.

Carry a luxury bag, wear a good watch, and you stand a little straighter. Put on a well-made suit and your posture shifts on its own.

A brand gives the person wearing it just a small push forward. For that reason, I can’t bring myself to dismiss brands entirely.

Still, I’ve noticed an interesting shift lately.

The era of displaying large logos loudly seems to be giving way to something quieter — “visible only to those who know.”

Hermès is like this. So is Bottega Veneta. The name doesn’t need to announce itself. The materials and construction say everything.

I imagine a lot of people find that quiet confidence appealing.

Thinking about it, people might be the same.

Someone who doesn’t need to explain their title over and over, yet others feel “they’ll be fine.” Someone who doesn’t loudly promote themselves, yet earns trust naturally.

A person like that carries their own brand.

Getting there isn’t easy, of course.

So in the beginning, it’s fine to borrow a little from what brands offer. Take that small confidence boost, and build experience one step at a time.

And someday, to be able to say —

“My name alone is enough.”

That, I think, would be the coolest thing of all.
