Preparation Has Value Precisely Because You Never Had to Use It

This trip to New Zealand meant driving through the South Island in the middle of winter.

Before leaving, I put in a fair amount of effort to prepare. I rented a four-wheel-drive SUV and, just in case, added snow chains to the rental. I checked road conditions every day and looked up the weather forecast for Lindis Pass more than a few times.

As it turned out, I never needed any of it. No real snow roads to speak of. The pavement was mostly dry, and the driving was surprisingly comfortable.

“Maybe I overdid the preparations a little.”

That thought crossed my mind.

And then I remembered something I had written on this blog just a few days earlier — about reserving a forward seat on the flight to make my Sydney connection easier. The plane ended up arriving early, and there was more than enough time. I had thought, “Maybe that seat wasn’t necessary after all” — but I ended with the idea that buying peace of mind was reason enough.

This felt exactly the same.

The four-wheel drive. The chains. Neither one got used. And yet that felt fine.

Years ago, on a trip through Arizona, I was caught in a sudden snowstorm somewhere I had only imagined as desert. Having a four-wheel drive then made a real difference. So this time, too, I chose one with the thought of “just in case.”

Nothing happened.

That, I think, is the best outcome.

My thinking has been shifting, gradually, in recent years. When I was younger, I used to feel that something unused was something wasted. Not anymore. Insurance. Forward seats on a plane. Four-wheel drive and snow chains. All of it.

The fact that nothing happened — that itself might be the value of being prepared.

This isn’t an argument for spending more money than necessary, or for worrying beyond reason. But if a modest amount of preparation lets you travel with a settled mind, that seems worth something.

Preparation isn’t there to be used. It’s there so you can feel grateful when you didn’t have to use it. That’s where I’ve landed lately.

A few days ago I wrote that I’ve come to appreciate not needing to use my insurance. A few days later, driving winter roads in New Zealand, I found myself thinking the same thing again.

Perhaps this is just a small piece of my own outlook — something that has taken shape, quietly, with age.
