今日は、マウントクックを歩いた。

雪をかぶった山々、氷河が削った谷、青く澄んだ川。ニュージーランドを代表する景色だけあって、本当に素晴らしい。

ただ、歩きながらふと思った。

こういう雄大な自然は、実は世界中にある程度共通している気がする。

七大陸最高峰を登る中で、さまざまな国の自然を見てきた。もちろん、それぞれに個性はある。でも、「圧倒的な山」「美しい湖」「広大な森」という意味では、どの国にも似たような感動がある。

マウントクックも、本当に素晴らしい。でもその素晴らしさは「ここだけにしかない」というより、「自然そのものが持っている美しさ」なのかもしれない。

だからこそ、少し興味が湧いてきた。

まだ行ったことのない北欧だ。フィンランド、ノルウェー、スウェーデン。広大な針葉樹林、湖、白夜、オーロラ。山というより「森と湖」が主役の景色は、これまで見てきた世界とは少し違うのかもしれない。

もう一つ、感じたことがある。

マウントクックは大自然の中にある場所なのに、思っていた以上に人が多い。最近はあまり走っていないけれど、近所の奥多摩も素晴らしい自然なのに、はるかに人が少ない。世界中から観光客が集まり、人気のトレイルは次から次へと人が歩いている。

それだけ魅力があるということなのだろう。

でも、どちらかというと、人の少ない場所のほうが好きなのかもしれない。誰もいない静かな景色の中で、風や鳥の声だけを聞きながら歩く時間。そういう場所のほうが、自然そのものと向き合えている気がする。

世界には、まだ見たことのない景色がたくさんある。

Walking Mount Cook

Snow-covered peaks, valleys carved by glaciers, rivers a clear deep blue. This is New Zealand’s most iconic scenery, and it lives up to that.

But walking through it, a thought came to me.

Landscapes like this — vast and wild — feel, in some ways, shared across the world.

Climbing the Seven Summits, I’ve seen nature in many countries. Each place has its own character, of course. But in the sense of overwhelming mountains, beautiful lakes, sweeping forests, there’s a similar feeling of awe in all of them.

Mount Cook is genuinely wonderful. But its wonder may be less about something that exists only here, and more about a beauty that nature itself carries.

That thought left me a little curious about somewhere I haven’t been.

Northern Europe. Finland, Norway, Sweden. Vast coniferous forests, lakes, the midnight sun, the aurora. Landscapes where forests and lakes take center stage rather than mountains — they might be a little different from everything I’ve seen so far.

There was something else I noticed.

Mount Cook sits deep in wilderness, yet there were more people than I expected. I haven’t been running much lately, but Okutama, close to home, has equally remarkable nature and far fewer visitors. Here, tourists come from all over the world, and the popular trails are a steady flow of people, one after another.

I suppose that’s a measure of how much this place draws people.

Still, if I’m being honest, I think I prefer places with fewer people. Walking in quiet scenery with no one around, hearing only the wind and birdsong. In places like that, I feel more directly in the presence of nature itself.

There are many landscapes in this world I still haven’t seen.
