今日、テカポで星空ツアーに参加した。

七大陸最高峰を登る中で、真っ暗な場所の星空を何度も見てきた。

エベレスト、キリマンジャロ、アコンカグア……。街の明かりがまったく届かない場所で見上げる夜空は、どれも息をのむほど美しかった。

それでも今日のテカポは、最高だった。

星そのものの美しさはもちろんだけれど、それ以上に、ガイドの方が一つひとつの星座や天の川の成り立ちを丁寧に説明してくれた。ただ「見る」だけじゃなく、「知りながら見る」時間になった。

振り返ってみると、人生で一番贅沢な星空の時間だったと思う。

もう一つ、驚いたことがある。

人口わずか500人ほどの小さな村なのに、日本人スタッフも日本人観光客も、本当に多いのだ。

どうしてこんな場所に、こんなに日本人がいるんだろう。

気になって調べてみると、その背景には、一人の日本人の情熱があった。

1989年、ワーキングホリデーでニュージーランドを訪れた小澤英之さんは、レイク・テカポの圧倒的な星空に魅了された。当時30歳で、ワーキングホリデー制度を使えるほぼ最後のタイミングだったという。その出会いをきっかけに移住を決意し、キャンピングカー1台から星空ガイドを始めた。地元の人々との信頼関係を積み上げながら活動を続け、やがて現在の「Dark Sky Project」の礎を築き、テカポ一帯を世界初のゴールドランク「国際星空保護区」へと導く大きな原動力となった。

今、多くの日本人スタッフがこの地で働いているのも、その流れがあってこそだという。

何も知らずに訪れた、小さな村だった。

でも、その歴史を知ってから見上げた星空は、昨日とはまた少し違って見えた。

海外で何かを成し遂げた人というと、最初から大きな資金や組織があったように思いがちだ。でも実際は、「この景色をもっと多くの人に伝えたい」という一人の思いから始まっている。

その情熱が地元の人を動かし、町を動かし、世界中から人が集まる場所へと変えていった。

世界中を旅してきて、景色だけで感動した場所はたくさんある。でも、その土地の歴史や、そこに関わった人の物語まで知って感動した場所は、それほど多くない。

テカポは、その両方を味わえた場所だった。

星空の美しさも素晴らしかった。でもそれ以上に心に残ったのは、一人の日本人が異国の小さな村で夢を追い続け、その夢が村の未来まで変えてしまったという事実だった。

今日見上げた満天の星空は、きっとこれからも、人生で一番の星空であり続ける気がしている。

Tekapo’s Night Sky — the Most Beautiful I’ve Ever Seen

I joined a stargazing tour in Tekapo today.

Climbing the Seven Summits, I have looked up at the stars from dark, remote places more times than I can count. Everest, Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua — the night sky from places untouched by city light was breathtaking every time.

Even so, Tekapo today was something else.

The stars themselves were beautiful, of course. But what made it more than that was the guide, who explained each constellation and the story of the Milky Way, one by one, with care. It became time spent not just looking, but understanding while looking.

Looking back, I think it was the most unhurried, richly felt time I have ever spent under a night sky.

There was one other thing that surprised me.

This is a small village of barely five hundred people, yet there were a remarkable number of Japanese staff and Japanese visitors.

I found myself wondering how so many Japanese people had ended up in a place like this.

When I looked into it, I found that behind it all was one person’s passion.

In 1989, a man named Hideyuki Ozawa came to New Zealand on a working holiday. He was captivated by the vast night sky over Lake Tekapo. He was around thirty at the time, near the upper age limit for the working holiday visa. That encounter led him to settle here, and he began guiding stargazing tours from a single campervan. He built trust with the local community over the years, eventually laying the groundwork for what is now the Dark Sky Project, and became a driving force in having the Tekapo area designated as the world’s first Gold-tier International Dark Sky Reserve.

The presence of so many Japanese staff working here today, I learned, flows from that history.

I had arrived knowing nothing about this small village.

But after learning that history, the sky I looked up at felt a little different from the night before.

When we think of someone who has built something abroad, we tend to imagine they started with substantial funding or an established organization. In reality, it began with a single wish — to share this view with more people.

That feeling moved the locals, moved the town, and turned it into a place people travel from all over the world to visit.

I have been to many places around the world that moved me through scenery alone. But places where I was moved by knowing the history of a land, and the story of someone connected to it — those are fewer.

Tekapo was both at once.

The night sky was beautiful. But what stayed with me more was this: one Japanese man had chased a dream in a small foreign village, and that dream had ended up changing the village’s future.

I have a feeling the sky full of stars I looked up at today will remain the finest night sky of my life.
