My Shoulders Have Been Killing Me
My shoulders have been bad lately.
Every time I move my neck, there’s a heaviness to it. By evening, a dull ache slowly spreads.
At first I thought it was the trampoline. I’d just started, so that seemed the obvious culprit.
But apparently not.
I swim several times a week. I run once a week. A body that’s been doing triathlons for years shouldn’t be undone by a little trampolining.
So what is it, then.
While looking into it, I came across something that gave me pause.
“When the head moves forward of the body, the load on the neck and shoulders jumps to two or three times normal.”
Two or three times.
I almost skimmed past it, then stopped and read it again.
The head weighs five or six kilograms — often compared to a watermelon. Shift it even slightly forward, and the neck is holding more than twice that weight. All day, for hours on end.
I can see how that happens.
When I’m at my desk, I’m probably jutting my chin forward. When I look at my phone, my neck drops. Without thinking, I drift into these postures without noticing.
I’d been telling myself that exercise was enough.
Swimming, running, keeping active. But exercise is only a small part of the day. If the rest of it is spent in a bad position, things don’t cancel out — they compound in the wrong direction.
The body is built from daily accumulation.
That’s a common enough thing to say. But I think I’d been conveniently forgetting the part where bad accumulation stacks up just as faithfully as good.
I’ve been going to a stretching therapist regularly, and every session there’s a moment where they press somewhere and say “this is really tight” — and I’m always surprised. I hadn’t noticed. I’d even thought that particular spot was fine.
Decline is hard to notice.
Because the change is gradual, there’s nothing to compare against. Yesterday and today feel nearly the same, so whatever state you’re in starts to feel normal.
Shoulder stiffness doesn’t appear in a day. It accumulates slowly, bit by bit, and then one evening it arrives all at once.
Posture sustained for hours every day may actually have more impact on the body than a few sessions of exercise per week. You can swim for an hour, but if the other twenty-three hours aren’t right, the body learns those hours instead.
Health works that way. Work probably does too.
Dramatic efforts matter less than small daily habits. And the small bad habits — the ones you tell yourself are fine — quietly compound into something harder to reverse.
I’m going to take another look at how I carry myself day to day.
When I notice my chin jutting out at the desk, I’ll pull it back. When my neck drops over my phone, I’ll lift it a little. Simply getting from two or three times the load back down to normal should make a real difference.
The body you’ll have in the future is being shaped by your posture today.
That’s what I keep coming back to.
