日経サイエンスを読んでいて、とても印象に残った一文があった。

「自然は残酷なのではない。何も判断しないほど、無関心なだけ。」

最初は少し極端な表現だと思った。

でも、『利己的な遺伝子』や進化生物学を読んでいくうちに、その意味が少しずつわかってきた。

きっかけは、ヒメバチの話だった。

ヒメバチの仲間は、芋虫の体内に卵を産みつける。
その前に毒針で神経を麻痺させるが、殺しはしない。
幼虫が育つ間、芋虫の体が腐らず、新鮮な「食料」のままでいるようにするためだ。

卵からかえった幼虫は、命にすぐ関わらない部分から少しずつ食べ始める。
生命維持に必要な器官は最後まで残され、芋虫は生きたまま動き続ける。
そして最後に、体の中を食べ尽くされて命を落とす。

初めて知ったとき、「自然はなんて残酷なんだ」と思った。

でも、立ち止まってみる。

自然は、この出来事を「かわいそう」とも「ひどい」とも思っていない。
ただ、そういう仕組みになっているだけだ。

ライオンがシマウマを食べる。
寄生虫が宿主を苦しめる。
病気で命を落とす生き物がいる。

そこには善悪も、正義も、悪意もない。

生き残りやすい遺伝子が次の世代へ受け継がれ、その結果として今の生態系がある。

『利己的な遺伝子』というタイトルも、遺伝子が「利己的な性格」を持っているという意味ではない。
遺伝子には意思も感情もない。
自分を次の世代へ残せた遺伝子だけが、結果として今も存在しているという話だ。
自分たちの体も、その遺伝子を運ぶための「乗り物」のようなものだという。

最初はとても冷たい考え方だと思った。

でも実際には、そのほうが自然を正確に見ているのかもしれない。

自然は優しくもなければ、残酷でもない。
人間の価値観そのものを持っていない。
だからこそ、ときに残酷に見える。

一方で、人間は違う。

病気を治療し、困っている人を助け、弱い立場の人を守ろうとする。
それは自然が教えてくれたことではない。
人間が長い歴史の中で築いてきた倫理であり、文化だ。

自然は「どうあるか」を示してくれる。
でも、「どうあるべきか」は教えてくれない。
その答えは、人間が考え続けるしかない。

日経サイエンスのあの一文は、少し冷たく聞こえた。

でも読み終えた今は、こう感じている。

自然は残酷なのではない。
何も判断しないほど、無関心なだけなのかもしれない。

Nature Is Not Cruel. It May Simply Not Care.

I was reading Nikkei Science when one sentence stayed with me.

“Nature is not cruel. It is simply indifferent — so indifferent that it makes no judgments at all.”

At first I thought it was a bit of an extreme way to put it.

But as I read further into The Selfish Gene and evolutionary biology, the meaning slowly started to make sense.

It began with a wasp.

Certain parasitoid wasps lay their eggs inside a caterpillar’s body. Before doing so, they sting it to paralyze the nervous system — but they don’t kill it. The point is to keep the body from decaying, to leave it fresh as a food source while the larvae develop.

When the eggs hatch, the larvae begin eating from the parts least vital to survival. The organs needed to sustain life are left until the end. The caterpillar stays alive, keeps moving. Then, finally, it dies — eaten from the inside.

When I first learned this, my immediate reaction was: how cruel nature is.

But then I paused.

Nature does not think of this as sad, or as terrible. It is simply how the system works.

A lion eats a zebra. A parasite torments its host. An animal dies of disease. There is no good or evil in any of it, no justice, no malice.

Genes that are better at being passed on reach the next generation. The ecosystems we see today are the result of that process.

The title The Selfish Gene doesn’t mean genes have selfish personalities. Genes have no intentions, no feelings. It simply means that only the genes capable of copying themselves into the next generation are the ones that still exist. Our own bodies, the book suggests, are something like vehicles carrying those genes.

I found that a cold way of looking at things, at first.

But perhaps it is actually the more accurate way to see nature.

Nature is neither kind nor cruel. It does not hold human values. That is precisely why it can appear cruel.

Human beings, though, are different.

We treat illness, help people in need, try to protect those who are vulnerable. Nature did not teach us any of that. It is the ethics and culture that humans have built up over a long history.

Nature shows us what is. It does not tell us what ought to be. That is something humans have no choice but to keep working out for themselves.

That sentence in Nikkei Science sounded cold when I first read it.

But having sat with it now, this is how I feel.

Nature is not cruel. It may simply be so indifferent that it makes no judgments at all.
