If Things Aren’t Going Well, Try Reaching Out First

I came across a line that stuck with me: the people who feel like they’re working hard but nothing good ever happens to them tend to be the ones who never invite anyone out themselves.

That rings true.

When you reach out to someone, you meet new people, and from there come work, information, unexpected opportunities. Thinking back on my own life, meeting people has led to all kinds of work and connections abroad that I never would have found otherwise.

Nothing starts if you just wait.

If you want your life to move, you have to be the one to reach out first. I really do believe that.

That said, there’s no need to get along with everyone. Meeting more people doesn’t automatically make life better.

Meet too many people and you exhaust yourself. You hop from drinks to networking events, your calendar fills up, yet nothing deepens. You hear too many opinions and lose track of what you actually want. Your contacts multiply but your work and skills haven’t grown. It’s surprisingly easy to end up in that state.

I don’t think it’s about how many people you meet.

What do you want to learn from this person? What do you want to talk about? What are you taking home with you? Without that, you’re just drifting.

There are things you can only get from meeting people — that’s true. New ways of thinking. Worlds you didn’t know existed. Unexpected work. Ideas that never would have surfaced on your own.

So when someone catches my interest, I do think it matters to reach out.

But at the same time, there has to be time spent alone — thinking, learning, building your work. Time for meeting people, and time for developing yourself. One without the other isn’t enough.

Waiting to be invited won’t move your life forward. But seeing someone every day won’t change it either.

Choose the people you genuinely want to meet. Then, after, return to your own work.

Maybe that back-and-forth is just about right.

What changes a life isn’t a wide network. It’s a handful of encounters with people you actually wanted to reach out to in the first place.
