AIブームの「もう一つの顔」

データセンターが狙われている、というニュースを読んだ。

サイバー攻撃でも、ハッキングでもない。
建設中の現場に夜間侵入して、資材を根こそぎ持ち去る、という話。

銅線、ネットワーク機器、電源設備。
トレーラーごと積み込んで、別の業者へ売り飛ばす。
アメリカでは2億円相当の資材が押収されたケースもある。

なんか、時代だな、と思った。

AIブームで世界中にデータセンターが建ち続けている。
そこには膨大な量の「物理的な資材」が集まる。
高価な機器、大量の銅線、冷却設備、電源インフラ。

デジタルとか、クラウドとか、そういう言葉で語られがちなAIの世界だけど、
その土台は完全に「重くて、かさばって、盗める物」でできている。

そこに目をつけた人たちがいる、ということ。

以前、窃盗団が狙うのは完成した商品だった。
スマートフォン、ゲーム機、ブランド品。
倉庫や店舗に並んだ「売り物」が標的だった。

それが今は、まだ建物にも入っていない資材のほうが”おいしい”らしい。
銅線だけで何百万円、設備まで合わせれば億単位。
一か所に大量に集まっているから、効率がいい。

犯罪も、時代に合わせてアップデートされていく。

少し前、顔認識技術の話を書いたことがある。
追う側の技術が進めば、逃げる側もその技術を研究し始める。
いたちごっこは、テクノロジーが高度になっても変わらない。
むしろ、ステージが上がるほど、振れ幅も大きくなっていく気がする。

AIのデータセンターを建てようとする人がいて、
その資材を盗もうとする人がいる。
表の顔と裏の顔が、同じ速度で大きくなっていく。

AIの話になると、どうしてもアルゴリズムやモデルの性能の話になる。
でも、その全部を動かしているのは、
サーバーを冷やす水と空気で、
電力を運ぶ銅の線で、
誰かが現場で取り付けたラックとケーブルだ。

そういう「完全に物理の世界」のほうで、静かに時代が動いている。

最先端の技術が、最もアナログな形で狙われている。
そのギャップが、なんとも言えない。

The Other Side of the AI Boom

I came across a news story about data centers being targeted. Not cyberattacks, not hacking. People breaking into construction sites at night and making off with materials — all of it.

Copper wire, networking equipment, power infrastructure. Loaded onto trailers, sold off to other dealers. In one case in the United States, materials worth the equivalent of about two million dollars were seized.

Something about that felt very of-the-moment.

AI is driving data center construction all over the world. That means enormous quantities of physical materials flowing into these sites — expensive equipment, copper wire by the ton, cooling systems, power infrastructure.

The AI world tends to get talked about in terms of the digital, the cloud, the intangible. But the foundation underneath it is entirely made of things that are heavy, bulky, and stealable.

Some people noticed that.

Theft crews used to go after finished goods. Smartphones, game consoles, luxury items. Merchandise sitting in warehouses or on store shelves — that was the target.

Now, apparently, materials that haven’t even made it into the building yet are the more attractive score. Copper wire alone can run into the millions. Add the equipment and you’re talking about sums with more zeros. Everything concentrated in one place — efficient.

Crime, too, updates itself to fit the times.

A while back I wrote about facial recognition technology. As the tools available to those doing the pursuing get more sophisticated, those being pursued start studying those same tools. The cat-and-mouse dynamic doesn’t go away just because the technology gets more advanced. If anything, the higher the stakes, the wider the swings seem to get.

There are people trying to build AI data centers, and there are people trying to steal the materials meant for them. The visible side and the hidden side are growing at the same pace.

When the conversation turns to AI, it tends to drift toward algorithms and model performance. But everything running on all of that is kept going by the water and air cooling the servers, by copper wire carrying electricity, by racks and cables someone installed by hand on a job site.

It’s in that thoroughly physical world where something is quietly shifting.

The most advanced technology is being targeted in the most analog way possible. That gap is hard to put into words.
