Make Your Mass Heavier. Leave a Dent in the Universe.
Yesterday, a regular customer came in with a friend. We ended up deep in conversation about Interstellar and Steve Jobs.
At some point, the customer mentioned a line from the Jobs film.
“Make your mass heavier. Leave a dent in the universe.”
He said it had really hit him. Hearing it, I thought: that’s almost unfairly good.
In physics, a massive object warps spacetime and creates what’s called a gravity well. The line takes that image and carries it straight into life. Make your own existence heavier, and gradually the world around you begins to bend toward you, to shift.
Saying “change the world” is somehow abstract. But “leave a dent in the universe” immediately becomes a picture you can see.
I also like that it’s a dent, not a wound. Not forcing something to break. Adding weight, and letting the surroundings change as a result. That’s the nuance I appreciate.
Hearing this, I decided on the spot: I’m going to start using this as something I’ve always said. I told the customer that, right then and there, and we laughed.
But maybe that process itself — receiving a good phrase from someone, running it through yourself, then sending it back out into the world as your own — is a small act of making your mass heavier.
Running an eyeglass shop, I often receive unexpected words and small discoveries through conversations with customers. It’s different from knowledge found in a book, or thoughts you’ve worked out on your own. When someone speaks with real feeling, their warmth comes along with the words. That’s why they land so cleanly.
Yesterday’s conversation was like that.
“Make your mass heavier” keeps working on me slowly. The work you put out, the words you write, the projects you’ve touched, the people who come to find you. These things accumulate, and something like a faint gravity begins to form around you.
Then people start coming on their own. Interesting things start finding their way to you.
An evening in an eyeglass shop, talking about Interstellar and Steve Jobs — I think that’s one of those moments that a small gravity brought into being.
So what does it actually mean to make your mass heavier? I think it comes down to accumulation. Not staying busy, not running many things in parallel. More like: continuing to climb, continuing to go deeper into eyeglasses, continuing to write. Each one adds a little mass, or so it feels.
Each piece is small on its own. But as they pile up, the density changes. When density changes, you get heavier. When you’re heavier, a dent forms.
On a cosmic scale, one person’s mass is nearly nothing. And yet this analogy feels real to me. When one person draws another toward them, I think it has something to do with a kind of density, a depth, that the person carries.
After yesterday’s conversation, I want to keep saying this phrase for a while — wearing the face of someone who’s always said it — and see what happens.
If each time I say it I get a little heavier, and someday, even just barely, I manage to leave a small dent in the universe — that would be something.
