Apple4年前の神機能「Universal Control 」

MacBookのカーソルが、画面の端まで動いていく。

そのままMac Proの3枚のモニターに、すーっと入り込む。別のコンピュータなのに、途切れない。キーボードもトラックパッドも、そのまま使える。

これがAppleのUniversal Control。気づいたのは、今日。

iPadとMacをまたいで使っていたから、それは使っていた。ただMac Pro とMacBook の間でも、キーボードもトラックパッドもそのまま使えるとは、今日まで知らなかった。

調べてみたら、Mac同士の連携は2021年のWWDCで発表された機能らしい。複数のMacをまたいで使えるようになったのは2022年以降だから、もう3年以上、ずっとそこにあった。気づかなかっただけ。

外から帰るたびにMacBookからMac Proへ手間をかけて移り、マウスを持ち替えて、作業の文脈をもう一度取り戻して。それが「仕方ないもの」だと思っていた。

2021年に世界が盛り上がっていたとしても、そのとき自分に必要でなければ、それは自分の話じゃない。

自宅にMac Proの3画面が並んで、MacBookとの行き来が日常になって、「この手間、なんとかならないかな」と感じはじめて、はじめてその機能が意味を持つ。

機能は発表されたときに生まれるんじゃなくて、自分が必要とした瞬間に生まれる。

「自分が必要とした瞬間」が、自分にとっての初日だ。

3年分の不便が消えた日の、あの感覚。カーソルが画面を飛び越えた瞬間は、2021年に発表を読んでいたとしても、手に入らなかったと思う。

それともう一つ。

毎日使っているMacやiPhoneにも、まだ知らないままの便利が山ほどあるはずだということ。

設定画面の奥、ずっとスルーしていたチェックボックス、意味がわからないまま放置していたアイコン。そこにも、誰かの「3年遅れの発見」が眠っている。

Appleが2021年に用意してくれていたものに、2026年の自分がやっと追いついた。

ただそれだけのことで、今日から作業が一つ軽くなった。

Apple’s Four-Year-Old Hidden Gem: Universal Control

The MacBook’s cursor drifts to the edge of the screen.

Then it slides, uninterrupted, across three monitors connected to a Mac Pro. A completely different computer — and yet there’s no break. The same keyboard, the same trackpad, still working.

That’s Universal Control. I noticed it today.

I’d known the feature existed. I’d used it to move between an iPad and a Mac. What I didn’t know, until today, was that it works between a Mac Pro and a MacBook too — keyboard, trackpad, all of it.

The moment it worked, I let out a sound. And immediately felt a little embarrassed.

Looking it up, I found that Mac-to-Mac support was announced at WWDC 2021. The ability to span multiple Macs came in 2022 or later, so it’s been there for over three years. I just hadn’t noticed.

Every time I came home, I’d go through the whole process of switching from MacBook to Mac Pro — swapping the mouse, reorienting myself, picking up the thread of whatever I’d been doing. I thought that was just how it was.

Even if the world got excited about it in 2021, it wasn’t my story yet. It wasn’t something I needed then.

It was only once three screens were lined up at home, once the back-and-forth between the MacBook became part of my daily routine, once I started thinking “there has to be a better way” — that the feature finally meant something.

A feature isn’t born when it’s announced. It’s born the moment you need it.

That moment is your own first day.

Three years of friction, gone. The feeling when the cursor crossed between screens — I don’t think I could have had that moment if I’d simply read about it in 2021.

One more thing.

The Macs and iPhones I use every day are full of things I still haven’t discovered.

Deep in settings menus, checkboxes I’ve scrolled past, icons I never understood and left alone. Somewhere in there, someone else’s three-years-late discovery is waiting.

Something Apple had ready in 2021, and my 2026 self finally caught up to it.

That’s all. And starting today, one small thing got easier.
