「M5 Ultra」搭載のMac Studio。IntelチップのMac Proが悲鳴

先日ブログに書いたGoogleの軽量AIモデル「Gemma 4」。
スマホでサクサク動くその軽快さに驚いて、「それなら、眠らせていたあの機体を復活させたらどうなるか？」と、ふと思い立った。

デスクの隅で埃をかぶっていた、かつての相棒。
Intelチップを搭載した2019年のMac Proを、久しぶりに起動した。

当時は「これさえあれば何でもできる」と思っていたスペック。
3.2GHz 16コアのIntel Xeon W、メモリ32GB。

Gemma 4のような軽量モデルを動かすには、数字の上では十分すぎるはずだった。

でも、実際に環境を整えて動かし始めてみると、なんとも言えない“重さ”を感じる。

推論のモタつき。
Apple Silicon（Mチップ）の統合メモリやNeural Engineに慣れた体には、IntelでのAI処理は一歩一歩が遅く感じる。

熱とファンの音。
処理が始まった瞬間、かつての重厚なファンが勢いよく回り出す。
「軽量」なはずのGemma 4なのに、ハードウェア側が全力で走っているような感覚になる。

やはり、2026年のAI環境において、Intelチップはすでに「前の時代の設計」なのだと実感した。

今年発売が噂されている「M5 Ultra」搭載のMac Studio。
今はそもそもMac Studio自体が在庫薄で手に入らない状況だけれど、これが出たらすぐに買い替えようと思っている。

そして、次は明確に“AI前提”の環境をつくりたい。

M5 Ultraをフルスペックで導入する。
圧倒的なUnified Memoryで、複数のAIモデルを同時にメモリ上に展開する。

24時間365日稼働する「AIサーバー」にする。
自宅や店で常にAIが待機し、メールやスケジュール、そして「誠眼鏡」の在庫状況までリアルタイムで把握する。

完全オフラインでの自律性。
昨日のGemma 4のように、外部にデータを出さず、思考も処理もすべて家の中で完結させる。

昨日のブログで「ガジェットは生鮮食品」と書いたけれど、
今回のMac Proは、それを自分で証明するような体験になった。

当時は最強だったマシンも、数年でここまで差が出る。

だからこそ、次は“いまの時間軸”に合った一台を選びたい。

“M5 Ultra” Mac Studio — When an Intel Chip Starts to Struggle with Today’s AI

In a recent post, I wrote about Google’s lightweight AI model, “Gemma 4.”
Its smooth performance on a smartphone left a strong impression on me.

And it made me wonder—
what would happen if I brought an old machine back to life and tried the same thing?

So I powered up a device that had been sitting quietly in the corner of my desk.
A former workhorse: a 2019 Mac Pro with an Intel chip.

At the time, I was confident in its capabilities.
“This machine can handle anything,” I thought.

It runs on a 3.2 GHz 16-core Intel Xeon W, with 32GB of memory.
On paper, it should be more than capable of handling a lightweight model like Gemma 4.

But once I actually set it up and started using it,
there was a certain kind of “heaviness” that was hard to ignore.

Inference felt sluggish.
After getting used to Apple Silicon—with its unified memory and Neural Engine—
AI workloads on an Intel chip feel noticeably slower.

Then there’s the heat and the fans.
As soon as computation starts, the fans spin up aggressively.
Even though Gemma 4 is supposed to be “lightweight,”
the hardware feels like it’s being pushed to its limits.

It made me realize something clearly.

In the AI landscape of 2026,
Intel-based systems feel like they belong to a previous era.

There are already rumors about a new Mac Studio equipped with an “M5 Ultra.”
Right now, Mac Studio models are difficult to find in stock,
but when the next version is released, I’m planning to upgrade.

And this time, I want to build something more intentional.

A fully specced M5 Ultra machine,
with enough unified memory to run multiple AI models simultaneously.

A system that runs 24/7 as a personal AI server—
handling emails, schedules, and even the inventory of Makoto Optical in real time.

And most importantly,
a setup that allows everything to run locally,
without worrying about sending data outside.

In yesterday’s post, I described gadgets as “perishable goods.”
This experience with the Mac Pro turned that idea into something very real.

I’m looking forward to the day the M5 Ultra Mac Studio arrives.
