ガジェットが昔から大好きだ。

新しいものが出ると気になるし、
つい試してみたくなる。実際に新しいものが出たら、どんどん買い替える。

でも最近、ふと気づいたことがある。

家電とヴィンテージは、まったく別の時間軸で動いている。

ヴィンテージのメガネや古いプロダクトは、
時間が経つほどに価値が乗っていく。

素材の変化や、使われ方の履歴、
その時代の空気まで含めて「味」になる。

どちらかというと、ワインに近い。

一方で、家電はまったく違う。

これは、ほとんど生鮮食品だと思っている。

まず、未使用でも劣化する。

通電していなくても、
バッテリーは弱っていくし、
ゴムや樹脂も少しずつ硬くなる。

箱に入れたままでも、
時間と一緒にコンディションは落ちていく。

そしてもうひとつは、
「新しいこと」自体に価値がある世界だということ。

新しいモデルが出た瞬間に、
それまでのモデルは一気に“過去”になる。

機能的には十分でも、
「一世代前」というだけで評価が変わる。

この違いは、けっこう大きい。

ヴィンテージは、時間を味方につける。

家電は、時間と戦う。

だから扱い方も変わる。

ヴィンテージは、長く持つことで意味が出る。

家電は、いいタイミングで使って、
いいタイミングで手放す方がいい。

ガジェットが好きだからこそ、
つい「持っておきたくなる」。

でも実際には、

使わないまま置いておくことが、
いちばん価値を下げてしまうことも多い。

最近は、

「これはワインか、生鮮食品か」

という視点で、モノを見ることが増えてきた。

同じ“モノ”でも、
時間との関係性がまったく違う。

その違いを理解しておくだけで、
持ち方や手放し方も、少し変わる。

Electronics Are “Perishable Goods”

I’ve always loved gadgets.

Whenever something new comes out, I get curious.
I want to try it. And in reality, I do end up upgrading quite often.

But recently, something occurred to me.

Electronics and vintage items operate on completely different timelines.

Vintage glasses and older products tend to gain value over time.

Changes in materials, traces of how they’ve been used,
even the atmosphere of the era they come from—these all become part of their character.

They’re more like wine.

Electronics, on the other hand, are completely different.

They’re closer to perishable goods.

Even when unused, they deteriorate.

Batteries degrade over time.
Rubber and plastic parts slowly harden.

Even if you leave them in the box,
their condition declines with time.

There’s another key difference.

In the world of electronics, “new” itself has value.

The moment a new model is released,
the previous one quickly becomes part of the past.

Even if it still functions perfectly,
being “one generation old” changes how it’s perceived.

This difference is significant.

Vintage items benefit from time.

Electronics are constantly fighting against it.

Because of that, the way you handle them should also be different.

Vintage items gain meaning the longer you keep them.

Electronics are better used at the right time,
and let go at the right time.

Because I like gadgets,
I tend to want to hold on to them.

But in reality,
leaving them unused is often the fastest way to lose their value.

Lately, I’ve started looking at things through a simple lens:

Is this wine, or is it perishable?

Even though they are both just “things,”
their relationship with time is completely different.

And just understanding that
changes how you keep them—and how you let them go.
