サトシ・ナカモト。承認欲求より、思想と安全を優先できる人間

またサトシ・ナカモトの記事が出ていた。

ビットコインを作った人物だ。2008年に論文を発表し、2009年にシステムを立ち上げ、そして2010年頃に突然姿を消した。それ以来、一度も表に出ていない。

あれだけ画期的なものを作ったのに、なぜ出てこないのか。気になって少し調べてみた。

答えは意外とシンプルだった。

「出てくるメリットより、出てきたときのリスクの方が圧倒的に大きいから」だ。

まず、法的リスク。

ビットコインは既存の金融システムを根底から揺さぶる存在だ。マネーロンダリング、脱税、闇市場での利用。そういったあらゆる責任を、創設者個人に押し付けようとする政府や規制当局が出てきてもおかしくない。

実際、e-goldという初期の代替通貨プロジェクトでは、創業者が捜査を受けて有罪判決を受けた。サトシがその事例を知っていたとしたら、「絶対に表に出ない」と決めていても不思議ではない。

次に、身の安全の問題。

サトシが保有しているとされる未動作のビットコインは、現在の価格で何兆円規模と推定されている。正体が明らかになれば、犯罪者や誘拐・強要のターゲットになり得る。これは冗談ではなく、現実的なリスクだ。

そして、プライバシーの問題。

一度名前が割れれば、メディアとネット世論に一生追いかけられる。普通の生活はまず不可能になる。

ただ、調べていて一番面白いと思ったのは、四つ目の理由だ。

「ビットコインの非中央集権という思想を守るため」というものだ。

創設者が表に出て「この方向が正しい」と言うだけで、事実上のリーダーになってしまう。プロジェクトが人物崇拝型になりかねない。

姿を消すことで、「技術とコミュニティがすべて」という構図を保っている。そういう解釈が広く共有されているらしい。

つまり、「名乗らない」のではなく、「名乗れないし、名乗らないこと自体がビットコインの設計思想の一部」と見る方が正確かもしれない。

これを読んで、少し考えた。

自分がサトシの立場だったら、どうするか。

何兆円規模の資産を持ちながら、それに一切触れずに匿名で生きる。世界中の人が使うシステムを作ったのに、誰にも知られずに生きる。

それができる人間は、かなり特殊だと思う。承認欲求より、思想と安全を優先できる人間だ。

ビットコインが面白いのは、作った人間がいなくなっても動き続けているところだと思う。

誰かのものではない。誰かが管理していない。でも、世界中で使われている。

サトシが姿を消したことで、皮肉にも、ビットコインは本当の意味で「誰のものでもないもの」になった。

名前を捨てて、
構造だけを残す。

それが設計通りだったとしたら、サトシは相当に賢い人物だ。

Satoshi Nakamoto — A Person Who Chose Principles and Safety Over Recognition

Another article about Satoshi Nakamoto came out recently.

Satoshi is the figure behind Bitcoin. He published the white paper in 2008, launched the system in 2009, and then disappeared around 2010. Since then, he has never appeared in public.

It made me wonder again.

Why would someone create something so groundbreaking, and then choose to stay hidden?

So I looked into it a bit.

The answer turned out to be surprisingly simple.

The risks of stepping forward far outweigh the benefits.

First, there’s legal risk.

Bitcoin fundamentally challenges the existing financial system. Money laundering, tax evasion, black markets—there are many issues that authorities might try to associate with it. If there were a clearly identifiable creator, it wouldn’t be surprising if governments or regulators tried to place responsibility on that individual.

In fact, with early alternative currency projects like e-gold, the founders were investigated and eventually convicted. If Satoshi was aware of cases like that, it would make sense to decide never to appear publicly.

Second, there’s personal safety.

The bitcoins believed to be held by Satoshi are estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars. If his identity were revealed, he could easily become a target for hacking, coercion, or even physical threats.

This isn’t hypothetical—it’s a very real risk.

Third, there’s the loss of privacy.

Once a name is revealed, it’s nearly impossible to live a normal life. The media and the internet would follow that person indefinitely.

But the most interesting point, at least to me, is a fourth reason.

Remaining anonymous may be essential to preserving Bitcoin’s core idea: decentralization.

If the creator were to appear and say, “This is the right direction,” that voice could quickly become an authority. The system could shift from being decentralized to being influenced by a single figure.

By disappearing, Satoshi left everything to the code and the community.

In that sense, it’s not just that he chose not to reveal himself.

It’s that staying anonymous may have been part of the design itself.

Reading all this made me think.

What would I do if I were in Satoshi’s position?

To hold assets worth tens of billions of dollars, never touch them, and live anonymously. To create something used around the world, yet remain completely unknown.

That requires a very unusual kind of person.

Someone who can prioritize principles and safety over recognition.

What makes Bitcoin fascinating is that it continues to function without its creator.

It belongs to no one. No one controls it. And yet it is used all over the world.

By disappearing, Satoshi may have allowed Bitcoin to become, in the truest sense, something that belongs to no one.

To give up a name,
and leave only the structure behind.

That may be the strongest kind of design.

And if that was intentional,
then Satoshi was an extraordinarily thoughtful person.
