DJIが個人向けドローンを発表し、日本にまだ明確な法律もなかった頃から、買っては触っていた。
そんなドローンも、最近ではどちらかというと戦争のイメージが強くなっていた。

ウクライナのニュースや、中東の映像。
精密にターゲットを捉え、遠隔で何かを実行する装置。

いつの間にか、そんな印象が自分の中で大きくなっていた。

でも、最近見たニュースで、そのイメージが、また少し変わった。

イギリスの刑務所で、ドローンを使った密輸が急増しているという話だ。

薬物や携帯電話、時には武器まで。
それらが、まるでUber Eatsのように、特定の房の窓まで直接届けられる。

この表現が、妙にリアルだった。

空から飛んできて、ピンポイントで落とす。
短時間で終わる。
リスクが低く、効率がいい。

つまりこれは、「技術が進化したから起きた犯罪」ではなく、
「効率のいい配送インフラが、ただ犯罪にも使われている」だけの話でもある。

よく考えてみると、ドローン自体はもう特別なものではない。

安く手に入るし、操作も難しくない。
そして「空を使う」というだけで、これまでの前提を簡単に飛び越えてしまう。

特に、古い構造のものは弱い。

イギリスの刑務所は、地上からの侵入には強く作られているけれど、
空からの侵入はほとんど想定されていなかった。

これは、ある意味で象徴的だと思う。

これまでの社会は、「地上」を前提に設計されていた。
でも、ドローンが当たり前になると、その前提自体が変わる。

境界が、上から崩れる。

そしてこれは、刑務所の話に限らない。

物流も、監視も、農業も、災害対応も。
すでにいろんな領域で、ドローンは「特別なもの」から「ただのインフラ」に変わりつつある。

そう考えると、

これからは「ドローンがある世界」ではなく、
「ドローンが前提の世界」を考えないといけないのかもしれない。

昔は、インターネットがそうだった。

最初は一部の人のものだったけれど、
気づいたら「あるのが当たり前」になっていた。

ドローンも、同じ道をたどる気がする。

ただ一つ違うのは、

それが「物理世界に直接影響する」という点だ。

情報ではなく、モノが動く。

だからこそ便利で、
だからこそ危うい。

戦争の道具としてのドローンも、
日常のインフラとしてのドローンも、

実は同じ延長線上にある。

使い方が違うだけで、本質は同じだ。

そして多分、これからは後者のほうが、静かに広がっていく。

気づいたときには、もう普通になっている。

そんな変化の途中に、いま自分たちはいるのかもしれない。

From “Drones as War” to “Drones as Everyday Life”

When DJI first released consumer drones—back when there weren’t even clear regulations in Japan—I used to buy them and experiment with them.

But recently, when I think of drones, the image that comes to mind is more about war.

Footage from Ukraine, scenes from the Middle East.
Machines that lock onto targets with precision and execute actions remotely.

Somewhere along the way, that impression quietly grew stronger in my mind.

But a recent piece of news shifted that image a little.

It was about a sharp rise in drone-based smuggling in UK prisons.

Drugs, mobile phones, even weapons—
delivered directly to specific cell windows, almost like Uber Eats.

That comparison felt strangely real.

They fly in from above, drop items with precision,
finish quickly,
and carry relatively low risk.

In that sense, this isn’t just “a crime made possible by new technology.”

It’s more like an efficient delivery infrastructure being used for illegal purposes.

When you think about it, drones themselves are no longer something special.

They’re relatively affordable, easy to operate,
and simply by using the air, they bypass many of the assumptions we’ve relied on.

Older systems, in particular, are vulnerable.

UK prisons, for example, were designed to prevent intrusion from the ground,
but not from above.

In that sense, this feels symbolic.

Our society has been built on the assumption of “ground-based boundaries.”
But as drones become commonplace, that assumption itself begins to shift.

Boundaries start to break from above.

And this isn’t limited to prisons.

Logistics, surveillance, agriculture, disaster response—
in many fields, drones are already shifting from something special to basic infrastructure.

If that’s the case,
we may need to start thinking not in terms of “a world where drones exist,”
but “a world where drones are assumed.”

The internet followed a similar path.

At first, it was something for a limited group of people,
but before long, it became something everyone simply expects to be there.

Drones may follow the same trajectory.

The difference is that they directly affect the physical world.

Not just information—
but actual objects moving.

That’s what makes them powerful,
and also what makes them unsettling.

Drones as tools of war,
and drones as everyday infrastructure—

they exist on the same continuum.

The difference lies only in how they are used.

And most likely, it’s the latter that will spread quietly.

By the time we fully notice,
it will already feel normal.

We may be in the middle of that transition right now.
