北極探検家の
ロアール・アムンセン（Roald Amundsen）
がこんな言葉を残している。

“Adventure is just bad planning.”

「冒険とは計画不足のことだ」

最初に読んだとき、少し意外だった。

探検家といえば、
未知の世界に飛び込む人。
危険を恐れず挑戦する人。

そんなイメージがある。

でも、この言葉は真逆のことを言っている。

アムンセンは1911年、
人類で初めて南極点に到達した探検家だ。

同じ南極点を目指していたイギリスの探検家、
ロバート・スコット隊もいた。

しかし結果は対照的だった。

アムンセン隊は無事に南極点に到達し、
全員生還した。

一方、スコット隊は帰路で全員が命を落とした。

この二つの遠征を比べると、
よく言われるのが準備の差だ。

アムンセンは出発前に、
徹底的に準備していた。

犬ぞりの運用。
服装。
食料。
補給地点。

さらに彼は、北極圏で暮らすイヌイットの生活から
極地で生きる技術を学んでいた。

一方スコット隊は、
犬ぞりより人力を重視し、
装備も重かったと言われている。

つまりアムンセンは、

「冒険」を減らすために、
徹底的に計画した。

だからこそ、彼はこう言った。

「冒険とは計画不足のことだ」

この言葉、
探検の話だけではない気がする。

人生のことを言っているようにも聞こえる。

挑戦というと、
大胆な決断や勇気のイメージがある。

でも実際には、
本当に遠くまで行く人ほど

地味な準備をしている。

派手な挑戦より、
静かな準備。

遠くへ行く人ほど、
実はそこに時間を使っている。

冒険とは計画不足。

人生で本当に遠くへ行きたいなら、
まずやるべきことは

大胆な挑戦ではなく、
静かな準備なのかもしれない。

Adventure Is Just Bad Planning

The polar explorer Roald Amundsen once said something interesting:

“Adventure is just bad planning.”

When I first read that, it felt a little surprising.

When we think of explorers, we usually imagine people who jump into the unknown.
People who take risks and chase danger.

But this quote is saying almost the opposite.

Amundsen was the explorer who first reached the South Pole in 1911.

At the same time, a British expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott was also trying to reach the South Pole.

The results were very different.

Amundsen’s team reached the South Pole and returned safely.
Every member survived.

Scott’s team reached the pole later, but all of them died on the return journey.

When people compare these two expeditions, one thing is often mentioned: preparation.

Before the journey, Amundsen planned everything very carefully.

Dog sled transportation.
Clothing.
Food supplies.
Supply depots along the route.

He also learned survival techniques from the Inuit people, who had long experience living in polar environments.

Scott’s team, on the other hand, relied more on human hauling and heavier equipment.

In other words, Amundsen tried to reduce “adventure” as much as possible through planning.

That is why he said:

“Adventure is just bad planning.”

This idea feels bigger than exploration.

It almost sounds like a lesson about life.

When we talk about challenges, we often imagine bold decisions and bravery.

But in reality, the people who go the farthest usually spend a lot of time on quiet preparation.

Not dramatic action.

Just careful preparation.

Sometimes the biggest journeys are built on the most ordinary groundwork.

If you want to go far in life,
maybe the first step is not a bold leap,

but quiet preparation.
