ある文章を読んだ。

「一等星の輝きだけが特別なのではありません。
五等星や六等星も含めた全体像に、わたしたちは初めて息を呑み、美しさを見出す」

この一節が、ずっと頭に残っている。

肉眼でやっと見えるかどうかの五等星。
条件が良くなければ見えない六等星。
そうした無数の「弱い光」が背景にあってこそ、夜空には奥行きが生まれ、私たちはその美しさに息を呑む。

自分たちはつい、珍しいものや強く輝くものに目を奪われてしまう。
けれど、あたりまえだと思っている世界の成り立ちに、驚きの目を向け続けられるなら、それ以上に創造的な態度はないはずだ。

一見「とるにたらない」と思われる出来事や感情のほうが、かえって深い意味を持つこともある。
歴史書に一行も載らないような、個人のささやかな出来事のほうが、生身の人間には強いリアリティを持つことも多い。

弱くて、小さくて、名付けようのないもの。
一見すると価値がないように見えるもの。
そうした「六等星」のような存在を、ちゃんと拾い上げられる眼を持っていたい。

本当に創造的なことというのは、「当たり前の世界」や「見過ごされがちなもの」の中に、驚きを見出し続けることなのかもしれない。

Not Only First-Magnitude Stars Matter

I read a passage the other day.

“Not only the brilliance of first-magnitude stars is special.
It is only when fifth- and sixth-magnitude stars are included in the whole that we truly catch our breath and discover beauty.”

That line has stayed with me.

Fifth-magnitude stars—barely visible to the naked eye.
Sixth-magnitude stars—ones you can only see when conditions are just right.
It is the countless number of these faint lights that give the night sky its depth, allowing us to feel its quiet beauty.

We tend to focus on what is rare or brightly shining.
But if we can keep looking at the ordinary structure of the world with a sense of wonder, there may be nothing more creative than that.

Things that seem trivial at first—small events, fleeting emotions—can sometimes carry deeper meaning.
Moments that would never earn a single line in a history book often feel far more real to the people actually living them.

Weak, small, unnamed things.
Things that appear to have little value.
I want to have eyes that can still notice these “sixth-magnitude stars.”

Perhaps true creativity lies in continuing to find quiet surprise within the ordinary world—
in what is easily overlooked, but always there.
