『ハウス・オブ・カード』と、NY新市長ゾーラン・マムダニ氏

正月休み、久しぶりにNetflixで
『ハウス・オブ・カード』を見返している。

権謀術数が渦巻くアメリカ政治のドラマ。
裏切りや取引、人脈と利権が複雑に絡み合う世界だ。

そんなドラマを観ていた流れで、
ふと現実のニュースに目が止まった。

ニューヨーク市長選で、
ゾーラン・マムダニ氏が当選したという。

正直に言えば、
アメリカの政治事情に詳しいわけでもないし、
現地で何かを取材しているわけでもない。

ただ、ドラマを見すぎているせいか、
ニュースを読んだ第一印象は、

「これは、なかなか大変そうだな」

というものだった。

マムダニ氏は、
いわゆる“出来上がった人脈”を多く持つタイプではないらしい。
エリート層との太いコネも、
ビジネス界との強いパイプも、あまりない。

『ハウス・オブ・カード』の世界に置き換えるなら、
武器をたくさん持った相手の前に、
比較的身軽な状態で立っている、
そんなイメージが浮かんだ。

それでも彼が勝った理由は、
とてもシンプルだったように見える。

「ニューヨークが高すぎる」

家賃は上がり続け、
地下鉄も高い。
働いても、生活が楽になる実感がない。

そうした感覚に対して、
抽象的な理想論ではなく、

「家賃をどうするか」
「交通費をどうするか」

と、生活に直結する話で応えた。
その切実さが、多くの人を動かしたのだと思う。

ただ、選挙に勝つことと、
実際に政治を動かすことは、まったく別の話だ。

市議会、不動産業界、ウォール街。
ニューヨークという街が、
正論だけで動く場所ではないことは、
ドラマを見ていても伝わってくる。

ここは、交渉と妥協の積み重ねでできた街だ。

増税や規制を掲げれば、
当然、力のある人たちとの摩擦も生まれる。
「正しいこと」が、すぐに通るとは限らない。

個人的にいちばん気になるのは、
期待値の高さだ。

「彼なら変えてくれる」

その期待が大きいほど、
「思ったほど変わらない」という失望に変わるのも早い。

銀座で眼鏡屋をやっていても、
これはよく感じる。

「これで全部うまくいきます」と言い切るより、
「できること」と「できないこと」を
きちんと分けて伝えたほうが、
結果的に信頼は残る。

だからこそ、
コネも後ろ盾も多くないマムダニ氏が、
市民の支持という“表の力”だけで、
どこまで現実を動かせるのか。

その一点には、
素直に興味を惹かれている。

「事実は小説より奇なり」と言うけれど、
これから彼が向き合う現実は、
ドラマよりも静かで、
でもずっと難しいものになるのかもしれない。
今回の行方、引き続き見ていたいと思う。

House of Cards and New York’s New Mayor, Zohran Mamdani

During the New Year holidays, I found myself rewatching House of Cards on Netflix.

It’s a drama steeped in American politics—backroom deals, betrayals, and the dense web of power and connections that keeps everything moving.
With that mood still lingering, a real headline caught my eye:

Zohran Mamdani had won the New York City mayoral election.

To be honest, I don’t pretend to understand the finer details of U.S. local politics.
Still, perhaps influenced by too many political dramas, my first thought was a simple one:

This has to be an incredibly difficult position to be in.

Mamdani isn’t known for deep-rooted elite connections or strong ties to the business establishment.
In the world of House of Cards, it would feel like stepping onto the battlefield without a full set of weapons.

And yet, he won.

The reason seems surprisingly straightforward.

“New York has become too expensive.”

Rents keep rising. Public transportation costs more. People work hard, yet life doesn’t get easier.
Instead of abstract ideals, Mamdani spoke in concrete terms—what to do about rent, about transit costs, about everyday expenses.

It wasn’t ideology that moved people so much as exhaustion.

Winning an election, though, is very different from governing.

City council, real estate interests, Wall Street—New York isn’t a place that runs on principles alone.
It’s a city built on negotiation and compromise.

Policies that sound right don’t always pass easily.
And perhaps the greatest risk he faces is expectation.

Hope can turn into disappointment quickly when change doesn’t come fast enough.
In my own work, I’ve learned that promising instant improvement often creates more pressure than progress.

Still, there’s something compelling about watching what happens next.

How far can public support—the “visible pressure”—push back against entrenched power?
If it works, it might become a model for other cities. If it doesn’t, it will likely be remembered as a hard lesson in political reality.

Either way, the coming years in New York may be more unpredictable—and more interesting—than any scripted drama.

From far away in Japan, I think it’s worth watching.
