命の使いどころ。バスのシートベルトとカーチェイス

今、長野への帰省で高速バスに揺られている。

発車直後、無機質なアナウンスが流れた。

「走行中は、シートベルトを着用してください」

車内を見渡してみる。
カチャリ、と音を立ててベルトを締めている人は、半数にも満たない。

窮屈だからか、面倒だからか。
あるいは「まさか事故なんて起きない」と思っているのか。

自分も昔は、「まあ、バスだし」と思っていた。
でも今は、乗った瞬間に必ず締める。

日本のバスでも、海外のタクシーでも、Uberでも。
例外はない。

別に、年をとって、極端な心配性になったというわけではない。
きっかけは、映画だった。

一番は『ボーン』シリーズ。
最強の暗殺者ジェイソン・ボーンが、カーチェイスに入る直前、
何の迷いもなくシートベルトを締めるあのシーン。

あの冷静な動作が、妙に印象に残った。

最強の暗殺者が、シートベルト？
一見、矛盾しているようで、実は逆だ。

強い奴ほど、リスクを管理する。
命を粗末にしない。
なぜなら、命には「使いどころ」があるから。それに妙に納得。

そして『ファイト・クラブ』でも、
ブラッド・ピット演じるタイラーが、
ハンドルから手を放して車を暴走させる直前、
やはりシートベルトだけはきっちり締める。

命知らずに見える彼らは、
実は誰よりも「守るべき場面」を間違えない。

プロフェッショナルは、
死ぬべきでない場所では、絶対に死なない。

その所作が、単純にかっこいいと思った。

シートベルトをすれば、生存率は上がる。
たった数％かもしれない。
でも、その数％は、決して小さくない。

なぜなら、理由はただ一つ。

ここで死ぬのは、もったいない。

高速道路での不意の事故。
居眠り運転の巻き添え。
自分の意思とは関係ない場所で、
あっけなく人生が終わるのは、どうにも納得がいかない。

どうせ同じ命を使うなら、
もっと別の場所がいい。

たとえば、火星の探査ミッションで、
酸素残量ギリギリまで粘って無念に散るとか。

あるいは、人生を賭けた大勝負の最中に燃え尽きるとか。

少なくとも、
「今、ここじゃない」。

シートベルト一本で、
不意の事故での生存率が数％でも上がるなら、安いものだ。

「ここぞ」というときのために、
命を温存しておくための、静かな準備だと思っている。

腹部のベルトの感触を確かめて、
シートに深く身を預ける。

少なくとも、
「今、ここじゃない」。

せっかくの命は、もっと面白く使うために、
少しでも守れるところでは、静かに、守っておく。

A Bus Seatbelt and Jason Bourne

I’m on a long-distance bus, heading back to Nagano.

Just after departure, a flat, automated announcement plays.

“Please fasten your seatbelt while the vehicle is in motion.”

I glance around the bus.
Less than half the passengers seem to bother.
Some might find it uncomfortable.
Some probably think, Nothing will happen.

I used to think that way too.
“It’s a bus, after all.”

But now, I buckle up the moment I sit down.

On buses in Japan, taxis overseas, even Ubers—no exceptions.

It’s not that I’ve become overly cautious with age.
The reason was surprisingly simple: movies.

The biggest influence was the Bourne series.
Right before a car chase, Jason Bourne calmly fastens his seatbelt—without hesitation.

That small, deliberate action stayed with me.

The world’s deadliest assassin… wearing a seatbelt?
It seems contradictory, but it isn’t.

The stronger someone is, the better they manage risk.
They don’t treat their life casually.
Because life has a purpose—a moment when it’s meant to be used.

The same goes for Fight Club.
Just before Tyler Durden lets go of the steering wheel and sends the car out of control, he makes sure his seatbelt is tight.

They may look reckless, but they never get the basics wrong.
Professionals don’t die in places they don’t have to.

That discipline felt quietly cool.

Wearing a seatbelt increases your chances of survival.
Maybe only by a few percent.
But a few percent is still meaningful.

For one simple reason:

Dying here would be a waste.

A sudden highway accident.
Being caught in someone else’s mistake.
Ending everything in a place completely unrelated to your own intentions—that doesn’t sit right with me.

If I’m going to spend this life, I’d rather do it somewhere else.

Maybe holding out to the last breath on a Mars mission.
Or burning out in the middle of a truly meaningful challenge.

At the very least, not here. Not now.

If a simple seatbelt can raise survival odds even slightly, it’s worth it.

I think of it not as fear, but as preparation—
quietly saving life for the moment it really matters.

I check the belt across my waist and sink back into the seat.

At least, not here.

If this life is going to be spent,
I’d like to keep it safe in the places where I can—
so I can use it properly, somewhere more interesting.
