今日、一本の電話がかかってきた。

名乗りは、
「沼津警察です」。

用件はこうだ。

「あなたが捜査対象になっています。
至急、沼津警察まで来てください」

ああ、これ。
最近よく聞く、警察を名乗る詐欺電話。

なので、特に深く考えずに、こう答えた。

「いやです」

そのまま電話を切って終了。

それ以降、何もかかってこない。
追いかけてもこない。
当然だ。

本物の警察が、
電話一本で「捜査対象だから来い」なんて言うわけがない。

でも、少しだけ考えた。

これ、たぶん
1000人に1人くらいは引っかかるのかもしれない。

・突然の「警察です」
・「捜査対象」という強い言葉
・考える暇を与えないスピード感

忙しいときや、気持ちが弱っているときなら、
一瞬、判断が鈍る人がいても不思議じゃない。

詐欺って、
頭が悪い人を狙っているわけじゃない。

むしろ、

・まじめな人
・言われたことをちゃんと聞こうとする人
・「迷惑をかけたくない」と思う人

そういう人ほど、引っかかりやすい。

考えてみれば、
彼らは1000人を騙す必要なんてない。

1000人に電話して、
1人でも動けば、それで“成功”。

成功率は、たった0.1％。
でも、1人から100万円取れれば、
1000回の電話代なんて余裕でペイする。

「あなたは犯罪に関与している」
「すぐに来署しないと逮捕状が出る」
「銀行口座を凍結する」

そんな言葉で不安を煽り、
お金を振り込ませたり、個人情報を聞き出す。

調べてみると、
全国で、こうした電話は毎日何百件も発生しているらしい。

そう思うと、
この手の電話がなくならない理由も、少し分かる気がした。

今回、自分がやったことは、ただ一つ。

乗らなかった。

それだけで、何も起きなかった。

たぶん、世の中のトラブルの多くは、
「参加しなければ成立しない」ものなんだと思う。

「今すぐ来てください」
「今すぐ対応しないと大変なことになります」

この「今すぐ」が出てきたら、
一度、立ち止まる。

今日の学びは、それだけ。

それにしても、
沼津かあ。

「銀座警察です」なら、
ほんの一瞬くらいは考えるかもしれない。

……いや、それでも、
「いやです」で終わるけど。

A Scam Call Claiming to Be “Numazu Police.” Ended With “No, Thanks.”

Today, I got a phone call.

The caller introduced himself as
“Numazu Police.”

This was the message:

“You are under investigation.
Please come to Numazu Police Station immediately.”

Ah, that one.
The scam that’s been going around—people pretending to be the police.

So without thinking too much, I replied:

“No, thanks.”

And hung up.

That was it.

No follow-up calls.
No threats.
No consequences.

Of course not.

Real police don’t tell you over the phone,
“You’re under investigation, so come here right now.”

Still, it made me think.

This probably works on about
one person out of a thousand.

• A sudden “This is the police”
• The heavy phrase “under investigation”
• The pressure of urgency

If you’re busy, tired, or already stressed,
it’s easy to hesitate for just a moment.

Scams don’t target “stupid” people.

If anything, they tend to work on people who are:

• serious
• polite
• inclined to listen carefully
• worried about causing trouble

Those are exactly the people who pause instead of hanging up.

But the scammers don’t need to fool everyone.

They call a thousand people.
If just one reacts, that’s success.

A success rate of 0.1%.

If they get one person to send 1 million yen,
the cost of a thousand phone calls is nothing.

“You’re involved in a crime.”
“If you don’t come in now, an arrest warrant will be issued.”
“We will freeze your bank account.”

They create fear, rush the decision,
and extract money or personal information.

Apparently, calls like this happen hundreds of times a day across Japan.

When you think about it that way,
it’s not hard to see why they keep going.

What I did today was simple.

I didn’t participate.

And nothing happened.

A lot of trouble in this world only exists
if you agree to take part in it.

“Please come immediately.”
“If you don’t act now, something terrible will happen.”

When you hear the words “right now,”
that’s usually the moment to pause.

That was today’s lesson.

Still… Numazu, huh.

If they’d said “Ginza Police,”
I might have hesitated for half a second.

…No.
Even then, I’d probably still say,

“No, thanks.”
