政治の“右と左”って何？

中学生の娘に、ふいに聞かれた。

「パパ、政治の右とか左って、どういうことなの？」

言われてみると、詰まってしまった。

いままで当たり前に聞き流していた言葉なのに、いざ説明しようとすると、言葉が出てこない。

そのときの自分の「？」を、今日は少し整理してみようと思う。

結論からいえば、右とか左というのは、

「世界をどう見るか」「どうあってほしいか」という、視点の違いのこと。ざっくり言うと、こういうことらしい。

右は、守る力。

左は、変える力。

「右（守る力）」の視点。これは、国の伝統や文化、秩序を大切にして、急に変えるのではなく「守りながら進む」という方向。「続けること」が、力になる世界。

一方、「左（変える力）」の視点。これは、今の社会の不便さや不平等に目を向けて、もっと良くするために変えていこう、という方向。「変える勇気」もまた、力になる。

けれど、中国やロシアや共産党はどうなんだろう？といいう疑問が湧いた。左（革新）のはずなのに、すごく厳しく守っている感じがする」

実は、今の世界は「右と左」という物差しだけでは、世界は測れないらしい。

右と左、そこにもう一本、別の定規が必要になる。「上と下」。

横軸（右と左）は、「どんな社会にしたいか」という方針の違い。

縦軸（上と下）は、「それをどうやって実現するか」という手法の違いだ。

上：国やリーダーが強い力で引っ張る（大きな政府・統制）
下：個人の自由を尊重する（小さな政府・自由）

ふと疑問に思った中国や旧ソ連、あるいは一部の共産党のイメージ。

それは、教科書的には「左（平等のために変える）」に分類される。

けれど、縦軸でいうと、極端に「上（強い統制）」にあることが多い。

「みんなを平等にするために（左）、国がすべてを管理して、強制的に従わせる（上）」

これが組み合わさると、個人の自由は制限される。

逆に、「右（伝統を守る）」であっても、極端に「上（強い統制）」にいけば、それはかつての軍国主義やファシズムになる。

「どんな理想（右か左か）」を掲げ「それをどうやって（自由か強制か）」実現しようとしているか。

世の中は、平面ではなく立体。結局、本質は人の価値観の積み重ねということなのだろう。

What Do “Right” and “Left” in Politics Really Mean?

One evening, while I was closing the shop, my middle-school daughter suddenly asked:

“Papa, what do ‘right’ and ‘left’ in politics actually mean?”

I froze for a moment.
It’s one of those phrases adults hear all the time, nod along to, and rarely question.
But when I tried to explain it, nothing came out.

So today, I wanted to put that confusion into clearer words.

At its core, “right” and “left” describe two different ways of seeing the world — two lenses for imagining how society should be.

The right is about the power to preserve.
The left is about the power to change.

The right values tradition, continuity, cultural inheritance, and stability — a way of progressing by protecting what has been built.

The left focuses on inequality, unfairness, and social problems — pushing to improve society by reshaping it.
“Changing things” becomes its form of strength.

But then another question naturally follows:

What about China, Russia, or traditional Communist parties?
Why do they seem extremely strict and controlling if they’re supposed to be on the “left”?

This is where the old left–right scale becomes too simple.
Modern politics needs a second axis — a vertical one.

The horizontal axis (left–right) describes what kind of society people want.
The vertical axis (top–bottom) describes how they try to achieve it.

Top: strong state power, centralized control
Bottom: individual freedom, smaller government

Countries like China or the former Soviet Union fall on the left horizontally (aiming to restructure society toward equality).
But vertically, they sit far toward the top — heavy state control and limited personal freedom.

“enforce it through centralized authority” (top)

That pairing can restrict freedom.

Likewise, even a “right” ideal — protecting tradition — can become oppressive if it moves too far upward, leading to authoritarian nationalism or fascism.

So political positions are not just about “right or left.”
They are about:

What ideal is being pursued?
— preservation or change

And by what method?
— through freedom or through force

The world is not one-dimensional.
Political reality is a combination of values, methods, and historical choices layered together.

My daughter’s simple question reminded me how easily adults accept labels without understanding them — and how a child’s curiosity can expose the gaps in our thinking.
