The Junk Food of Admiration
The words of former football player Chad Johnson struck a chord in me.
“Luxury goods are the ‘junk food of admiration’.”
Working here in Ginza, the weight of those words hits painfully close to home.
Many people wrap themselves in top-tier brands.
There is nothing wrong with that.
Beautiful things are simply beautiful.
However, just as junk food gives you instant fullness but leaves you with no nutrition, admiration gained through objects is fleeting.
It disappears quickly.
And before you know it, the brain craves a stronger stimulation.
More expensive watches.
Flashier bags.
Bigger logos.
Rarer items.
It borders on addiction.
It fills you for a moment, but it never becomes part of your flesh and blood.
Chad Johnson continues:
“I am me. No matter how many luxury goods I wear, I can’t become more than that.”
We must never be a “smaller existence” than the things we wear.
I find myself overlapping this with my own business.
I may handle “brand name” items in my shop.
But is “brand power” really what my customers are seeking?
The skill of styling, the atmosphere of the shop, a sense of peace.
In the end, I believe they are looking for “human value.”
The allure of a brand is merely the entrance.
What gets chosen in the end is the sincerity of the shop and its staff.
Greeting with warmth.
Offering careful proposals.
Engaging with sincerity.
Keeping promises.
Never cutting corners.
Luxury goods may color our lives.
But it is our own actions and words that actually build our lives.
Rather than the junk food of admiration, the nutrition of “trust”—grown slowly and carefully—lasts much longer.
Objects can be stolen.
Objects break.
Objects lose their appeal.
But built trust cannot be stolen.
Stacked achievements do not break.
Genuine relationships never grow old.
It is time to graduate from the junk food of admiration.
47 years old.
From now on, I don’t want to “add” things to the outside to make myself look bigger.
I want to polish the “material” that is myself.
I want my name, as a shopkeeper, to be a greater proof of trust than any brand logo.
To be able to stand tall, even without wearing anything expensive.
Not buying more, but building up.
That is the way I want to live.
