香港Day1 ATMカードが吸い込まれて出てこない

今日は朝、深圳を出て陸路で香港へ向かった。

久しぶりの越境だったけれど、驚くほどスムーズ。
イミグレもほとんど混んでおらず、まるで「隣町」に行くような感覚で香港へ入っていける。

距離にして約40km。
「昼だけ香港に行って、夜に深圳へ戻る」そんな生活が普通に成り立つのも納得だ。
だからこそ、イミグレを行き来する人の多くが、バックパックだけの身軽な姿なのだろう。

家を買うにしても、香港側より中国側のほうが価格を抑えられるらしい。
それでいて通勤できるなら、それも“ひとつの選択肢”なのかもしれない。

香港ではメガネの展示会をさっと見て、
取引先のメーカーさんを2社訪問。
夜はまた友人に、たっぷりご馳走になってしまった。

今回の旅は本当に毎晩ご馳走続き。
南部の中国らしく野菜もたっぷりで、食べれば食べるほど体が元気になっていく。

「中国南部は食が豪華」という言葉は、やっぱり本当だ。

そして今日の“人生初”の出来事。

HSBCのビジネスアカウントが6ヶ月動いていなかったためロックされており、
その解除のため銀行へ向かった。
ロック解除自体はスムーズに終わったのだけれど

その前に、ロック中の口座でATMから引き出せるか試した際、
ロック中のまま暗証番号を3回入力してしまい、カード自体が“無効状態”に。

吐き出されたカードをATMに挿したまま、
解除方法を携帯で調べていたのが運の尽き。
カードを取り忘れていたところ、カードがそのまま吸い込まれてしまった。

係員の方によると、

「今日はもう出てきません。
運がよければ明日。
場合によってはもっと時間がかかることもあります。」

とのこと。

調べると、このカードが吸い込まれる仕組み、HSBCだけではなく世界共通の仕様で
放置されたカードを保護するための仕組みだという。

通常はすぐカードを抜くから起きないトラブルだけれど、
携帯に気を取られていた、完全に自分の不注意。

「普通は、こんなこと、そうそう起きる人いないだろうな」と思っていたら、
自分の前にいた香港人のマダムもまったく同じ状況でカードを吸い込まれていた。
結局、二人そろって窓口で対応してもらうことに。
人生、こういう偶然もあるものなのだ。

仕事は順調、食事は最高、そして最後にATMにカードは吸い込まれる。

まあ、そんなドタバタも含めて、今日も“いつもの香港”だった。
スムーズで、雑多で、エネルギッシュで、どこか落ち着く。

香港の友人たちは「だいぶ変わってしまった」と言い、
ペナンへ拠点を移しつつあるけれど

旅人の自分にとっては、どんな小さなトラブルも含めて
「ああ、また来よう」と思わせてくれる街、香港。

Hong Kong Day 1 — The Same Old Hong Kong, Even When an ATM Eats Your Card

This morning, I left Shenzhen and headed to Hong Kong by land.

It had been a while since I last crossed the border, but the process was surprisingly smooth.
Immigration wasn’t crowded at all, and it felt almost like entering a neighboring town rather than crossing into another region.

It’s only about 40km between the two cities.
No wonder people can easily “spend the afternoon in Hong Kong and go back to Shenzhen at night.”
Most travelers crossing the border were carrying nothing more than a simple backpack.

Even when it comes to buying a home, properties on the Shenzhen side seem to be more affordable than those in Hong Kong.
If you can still commute easily, that might be a perfectly reasonable option.

In Hong Kong, I took a quick look around the eyewear exhibition,
visited two partner manufacturers,
and in the evening, I was once again treated to an amazing dinner by a friend.

This entire trip has been full of generous hospitality.
Southern China is known for its rich cuisine—and with all the fresh vegetables, I could feel my energy coming back bit by bit.

That saying, “Food in the South is extravagant,” really is true.

And then came today’s “first-time experience.”

My HSBC business account had been locked after six months of inactivity,
so I went to the bank to get it unlocked.
The unlocking process itself was smooth, but before that—

While the account was still locked, I tried withdrawing money from an ATM,
entered my PIN incorrectly three times,
and the card became disabled.

After the ATM spat the card out, I left it inserted while checking instructions on my phone.
That was a mistake.
Because the card remained unattended in the slot, it was sucked into the ATM for security reasons and didn’t come back out.

The staff member told me:

“It won’t come out today.
If you’re lucky, maybe tomorrow.
Sometimes it takes even longer.”

I later learned that this “card swallowing” mechanism isn’t unique to HSBC—it’s a worldwide standard to prevent theft.
Normally, you’d remove your card immediately, so it wouldn’t happen.
But today, I was careless and distracted by my phone.

Just as I was thinking,
“People probably don’t make this kind of mistake very often,”
I realized the Hong Kong lady in front of me had experienced the exact same thing.
The two of us ended up standing side by side at the counter, asking for assistance.

Life really does have funny coincidences.

Work went well, the food was amazing,
and in the end, an ATM ate my card.

But honestly, all of this—smooth moments, chaotic moments, warm moments—
is exactly what makes Hong Kong feel like “Hong Kong.”

My Hong Kong friends say the city has changed a lot,
and some are shifting their lives toward Penang.
But as a visitor passing through, even the small troubles feel like part of the charm.

And once again, I find myself thinking:

“I’ll be back.”
