メガネ屋をはじめて17年。
それぞれの分野には、それぞれのルールがある。
決められたルート、決められた競争相手。

一度そのレースに入ってしまうと、
その他大勢の中で消耗していく。
その中でトップに立てるのは、ほんの一握り。

そして、その他大勢でいる限り、
見える景色は、なかなか変わらない。

でも、少しだけ道を外れると、ふっと楽になる。

常識や、みんなが歩く舗装された道から
ほんの少し外れてみる。
すると、肩の力が抜ける。
誰かと比べることも、競うことも減っていく。

みんなと同じ道を歩いていたら、
いつまでも誰かの背中を追いかけるだけ。

けれど、
誰も走っていない荒れ地や、
誰も見向きもしなかった脇道に一歩足を踏み出すと、
そこにはまったく違う空気が流れている。

その瞬間、競争相手はいなくなる。
さらにもう少し外れていくと、
気づけば自分が、その道のパイオニアになっている。

先頭が、自分自身になる。
誰かのルールじゃなく、
自分のルールで進めるようになる。

もちろん、そこには保証もないし、
不安や孤独もつきまとう。
でも、もう比べる相手はいない。
追いかける背中もない。

自分が道を作り、
自分がルールになる。

安全な場所で、ゆっくり成長するのもいい。
でも、それでは届かない相手がいる。
辿り着けない場所がある。

本気で何かを変えたいなら、
本気で誰かに追いつきたいなら、
少し別の道を探すしかない。

そして、もう一つは“熱狂”だ。

スキルや知識は、後からついてくる。
大事なのは、その場の熱量に身を委ねること。
火傷するくらい、のめり込むこと。

周りが寝ている間も、作業に没頭する。
食事の時間を忘れるほど夢中になる。

そんな“狂気”のような熱狂の中にいると、
気づけば、思いもしなかった場所に立っている。

たどり着けない場所、
会えない相手がいるのなら、
正面から挑んでも弾かれる。

その他大勢と同じ列に並んでも、
届かないところがある。

ならば——
誰も立ち入らない道から行けばいい。

自分の時間を、どこに貼るかを決める。
ちょっと道を外れて、
熱狂の渦に飛び込んでみる。

通常のレースだけが、レースじゃない。
ほんの少し道を外れるだけで、
景色は驚くほど、楽になる。

When You Step Off the Path, Things Get Easier

It’s been 17 years since I started my eyewear business.
Every field has its own set of rules —
its fixed routes, its familiar rivals.

Once you join that race,
you end up exhausting yourself among the crowd.
Only a handful ever reach the top.

And as long as you stay part of “everyone else,”
the view never really changes.

But if you step off the path just a little,
suddenly, things get easier.

When you veer away from the paved roads
that everyone else is walking,
you start to breathe more freely.
You stop comparing.
You stop competing.

As long as you stay on the same road,
you’ll always be chasing someone’s back.

But if you step into the rough ground —
onto the side paths no one ever looked at —
you’ll find a completely different air there.

In that moment, the competition disappears.
Take one more step,
and before you know it, you’ve become a pioneer.

You’re at the front.
You make the rules now.

Of course, there are no signs, no guarantees.
There’s uncertainty, and sometimes loneliness.
But there’s no one left to compare yourself to,
no one’s back to chase.

You’re the one making the path.
You’re the one defining the game.

It’s fine to grow slowly in a safe place.
But there are people you’ll never catch,
places you’ll never reach that way.

If you truly want to change something,
if you truly want to catch up to someone you admire,
you’ll have to find another way.

And the other key is passion.

Skills and knowledge will follow later.
What matters first is surrendering yourself to the energy of the moment —
throwing yourself in so deeply that it almost burns.

Working while everyone else is asleep.
Forgetting to eat because you’re so immersed.

When you live inside that kind of “mad” enthusiasm,
you’ll one day look up and realize
you’ve arrived somewhere you never expected.

If there’s a place you can’t reach,
or a person you can’t meet,
don’t go through the front door.

Standing in line with everyone else won’t get you there.
So take a different path — one no one has entered yet.

Decide where to place your time.
Step off the path a little.
Throw yourself into the swirl of passion.

The usual race isn’t the only race.
Sometimes, stepping just a little off the path
changes everything—
and makes life a whole lot lighter.
