ブータンの「国民総幸福度（GNH）」って、聞いたことあるだろうか。

お金やモノより、国民の幸福を国の最優先に掲げる理念だ。

ヒマラヤに抱かれた、仏教王国。

「世界で一番幸せな国」とも呼ばれている。

その根底にあるのは、「比べない」という価値観。

足るを知り、精神的な豊かさを大切にする。

外界からある程度、閉ざされていたからこそ、その均衡は保たれてきた。

しかし今、その静かな王国に、否応なく波が押し寄せているという。

そう、スマートフォンと、インターネットという波が。

手のひらの画面は、これまで見ることのなかった世界の暮らしを映し出す。

そして、人々の心に「比較」という種を植え付けた。

自分たちが持っていないモノを知り、外の世界と自分たちの暮らしを比べてしまう。

その結果、国内のお金は海外へ流れ、若者は新しい仕事を求め始める。

ブータンにも、かつてはなかった社会問題が、生まれつつある。

これは、現代を生きる社会の縮図だ。

SNSを開けば、誰かの人生の「ハイライト」が目に飛び込んでくる。常に、他人のそれと、自分の日常を比べて生きている。

かつてのブータンが築いた幸福は、「比べない」ことで成り立っていた。

でも、世界が繋がった今、「比べない」生き方は、もはや幻想なのかもしれない。

だとすれば、これからの時代の「幸福」とは何だろうか。

それは、情報を遮断することではない。

世界中のあらゆる暮らしを知った上で、なお、「自分にとっての豊かさ」を定義できる強さ。

それこそが、新しい時代の幸福論なのかもしれない。

Bhutan’s GNH and the Challenge of the Smartphone Age

Have you ever heard of Bhutan’s “Gross National Happiness (GNH)”?

It’s a philosophy that puts the happiness of the people as the nation’s top priority, above money or material things.

A Buddhist kingdom, nestled in the Himalayas.

It’s also called “the happiest country in the world.”

At its foundation is the value of “not comparing.”

To know contentment, to value spiritual richness.

This balance was maintained precisely because it was, to some extent, closed off from the outside world.

But now, a relentless wave is said to be washing over that quiet kingdom.

Yes, the wave of smartphones and the internet.

The screen in the palm of one’s hand reflects lifestyles of the world never seen before.

And it has planted a seed of “comparison” in people’s hearts.

They learn of things they don’t have, and compare their lives with the outside world.

As a result, domestic money flows overseas, and young people start seeking new kinds of jobs.

Social problems that never existed before are beginning to emerge, even in Bhutan.

This is a microcosm of our modern society.

Open social media, and the “highlights” of someone’s life jump out at you.

We are always living while comparing that with our own daily lives.

The happiness that old Bhutan built was based on “not comparing.”

But now that the world is connected, a life of “not comparing” may no longer be anything but an illusion.

If that’s the case, what is “happiness” in this new era?

It is not about blocking out information.

It is the strength to know all the ways of life in the world, and still be able to define “what richness means to me.”

That, perhaps, is the new philosophy of happiness.
