長年、最も愛するアニメの一つが「攻殻機動隊」。公安9課、電脳、義体、そして草薙素子が身にまとう「光学迷彩」。そのサイバーパンクな世界観に、どれだけ心を躍らせてきたかわからない。

その中でも、特に心を掴んで離さなかったあの「光学迷彩」が、ついに現実のものになった。

株式会社EVISIONが、東大の稲見昌彦教授を中心とする錚々たる研究チームが生み出した光学迷彩技術の特許を、全面的に譲り受けたというニュース。これは単なる話題作りではない。米TIME誌の「最もクールな発明」にも選ばれたこの技術は、すでに「VR能攻殻機動隊」として舞台演出にも応用され、国内外で大きな反響を呼んでいる。本気で実用化を目指す、本物の技術なのだ。

そしてEVISIONは、この「見えない」を「魅せる」に変える技術を、世界のライブエンターテイメントに広げていくという。想像するだけで、ワクワクが止まらない。

Ghost in the Shell Was a Roadmap to the Future: The Power of Anime to Inspire Real Technology

For years, one of my most beloved anime has been Ghost in the Shell. Section 9, cyberbrains, prosthetic bodies, and of course, the “optical camouflage” worn by Major Motoko Kusanagi. I can’t even begin to describe how much that cyberpunk worldview has thrilled me.

And now, the one element that captured my imagination more than any other—that very “optical camouflage”—has finally become a reality.

The news just broke that a company called EVISION has fully acquired the patent for the optical camouflage technology created by a star-studded research team led by Professor Masahiko Inami of the University of Tokyo. This isn’t just a publicity stunt. This is real technology, so impressive that it was chosen as one of TIME magazine’s “Coolest Inventions” and has already been applied in the stage production “VR Noh Ghost in the Shell,” which was met with great acclaim both in Japan and internationally. This is genuine technology, with the serious aim of practical application.

EVISION says it will take this technology that turns “invisible” into “captivating” and expand it into the world of live entertainment. The very thought of it is incredibly exciting.

This news makes me think once again about the relationship between technology and imagination.

The future vision depicted in Ghost in the Shell is, little by little, becoming our reality. Its portrayal of a networked society foresaw the proliferation of the internet and smartphones. And now, optical camouflage is no longer fiction. It will likely start in entertainment and eventually be applied to military, medical, and industrial fields—exactly the progression depicted in the story.

The vision drawn by the original author, Masamune Shirow, was not mere fantasy. It was also a “roadmap” for engineers.

The imagination that thinks, “Wouldn’t it be great if this technology existed?” turns into the challenge of, “Well then, let’s try to build it.”

I believe this shows the underlying strength of Japanese anime culture. It goes beyond simple entertainment to present a vision of the future, which in turn drives real-world technological development. This isn’t limited to Ghost in the Shell. Think of the mobile suit technology in Gundam, the secret gadgets of Doraemon, or the robotics of Astro Boy. Countless anime works continue to stimulate the imaginations of engineers.

The world depicted in Ghost in the Shell is filled with technologies that have not yet been realized: cyberbrains, full-body prosthetics, AI like the Tachikomas. But now that optical camouflage has become a reality, it makes you seriously believe that these other technologies might just be a matter of time.
