最近、Creepy Nutsの「かつて天才だった俺たちへ」という曲を、それこそ毎日っていうくらい、繰り返し聴いている。

なぜ、こんなにもこの曲が心に響くのか。それは、この曲の歌詞が、僕が最近考えていた「夢の追い方」についての、二人の指導者の言葉と、あまりにも完璧にシンクロするからだ。

「苦手だとか怖いとか　気付かなければ　俺だってボールと友達になれた」

この曲の冒頭の一節に、すべてが詰まっている気がする。

子どもの頃、僕たちは皆「天才」だった。怖いもの知らずで、自分の限界なんて知らなかった。「自分にはこれができるだろうか？」なんて考える前に、ただ夢中でボールを追いかけていた。そこには、「できるか、できないか」という思考は存在しない。純粋な「やる」という衝動だけがある。

これって、まさに2023年のWBCで野球日本代表を世界一に導いた、あの栗山英樹監督が言う「一流になる選手は『できるか、できないか』ではなく、『やるか、やらないか』で考えている」という、そのものじゃないか。

僕たちは大人になるにつれて、「自分には才能がないから」とか「失敗したら恥ずかしいから」とか、やらない理由を探すのがうまくなる。いつの間にか、社会の常識や他人の評価というフィルターを通して、自分で自分の限界を決めてしまう。かつて、ボールと友達になれたはずの、あの「天才」だった自分を、自分で封じ込めてしまうのだ。

「破り捨てたあの落書きや　似合わないと言われた髪型」

でも、その「天才」の心を取り戻し、「やる」と決めて一歩を踏み出したとして、話はそう単純でもない。そこで、栗山監督の言葉に重なるように、もう一人の名将の言葉が響いてくる。春高バレーで史上最多優勝を誇る、古川学園の元監督・国分秀男さんが語る「我慢の時」という真実だ。

世の中に出て、自分の「好き」を貫こうとすれば、必ず周りからの否定や、うまくいかない時期が訪れる。「似合わない」と言ってくる声に、心を折られそうになる。その時に、すべてを「積極的プラス思考で受け止め、簡単に諦めないこと」。その「我慢の時」を経て初めて、自分のスタイルは確立されていく。

「かつて天才だった俺たちへ」という、この曲の呼びかけは、「できるか、できないか」で悩む前の、あの無敵だった頃の自分を思い出させてくれる。

そして、栗山さんの言葉が「やるか、やらないか、答えはシンプルだろ？」と、僕たちの背中を強く押してくれる。

さらに、国分さんの言葉が「その先は、少し我慢だぞ」と、挑戦に必要な覚悟を教えてくれる。「できないことをできるようになるから嬉しい」。そう、本来挑戦とは、できないことに向かっていくものだった。

「かつて天才だった」と過去形で語ってしまう自分を、もう一度現在進行形にする方法はもしかすると、とってもシンプル。

1. 我慢の季節を受け入れる。
2. 迷ったらとりあえず動く。
   

可能性の扉。その扉を開けるかどうかは、自分次第。「できるか、できないか」ではなく、「やるか、やらないか」。その選択が、人生を変えていく。

To Those of Us Who Were Once Geniuses

Recently, I’ve been listening to a Creepy Nuts song called “To Those of Us Who Were Once Geniuses” almost daily, on repeat.

Why does this song resonate so deeply? It’s because the lyrics sync perfectly with thoughts I’ve been having about “how to pursue dreams,” inspired by words from two great coaches.

The opening lines capture everything I’ve been feeling.

As children, we were all “geniuses.” Fearless, unaware of our limitations. Before asking “Can I do this?”, we simply chased after the ball with pure passion. There was no “can I or can’t I” thinking—just the pure impulse to “do.”

This perfectly embodies what Hideki Kuriyama, who led Japan’s baseball team to victory in the 2023 WBC, says: “Elite athletes don’t think ‘can I or can’t I’—they think ‘will I or won’t I.'”

As we grow older, we become skilled at finding reasons not to try: “I don’t have talent,” or “I’ll be embarrassed if I fail.” Without realizing it, we start seeing ourselves through filters of social norms and others’ judgments, setting our own limits. We lock away that “genius” who could have been friends with the ball.

The song references discarded doodles and hairstyles people said didn’t suit us.

But even if we reclaim that “genius” mindset and decide to take that first step, it’s not that simple. Here, overlapping with Kuriyama’s words, comes wisdom from another legendary coach—Hideo Kokubu, former coach of Furukawa Gakuen, who led his team to the most championships in Spring High Volleyball history. He speaks of the truth about “times of perseverance.”

When you try to pursue what you love in the real world, you’ll inevitably face rejection and periods when things don’t go well. Voices saying “that doesn’t suit you” will try to break your spirit. The key is to “receive everything with positive thinking and not give up easily.” Only through these “times of perseverance” can you establish your own style.

The song’s call “To those of us who were once geniuses” reminds us of our invincible selves before we started asking “can I or can’t I?”

Kuriyama’s words push us forward: “Will you or won’t you? The answer is simple, right?”

And Kokubu’s words prepare us: “There will be some perseverance ahead.” As he says, “The joy comes from becoming able to do what you couldn’t do before.” Yes, challenge has always been about facing what we cannot yet do.

The way to transform ourselves from speaking in past tense about being “once a genius” back to present tense might actually be quite simple:

1. Accept the seasons of perseverance.
2. When in doubt, just move.

The door of possibility. Whether we open it is up to us. Not “can I or can’t I,” but “will I or won’t I.” That choice changes everything.
