「宇宙ビジネスなんて、自分とは無縁でしょ？」

そう思っている人、まだ多いかもしれない。けれど現実は、2023年時点で約98兆円に膨らんだ宇宙経済のうち、実に7割以上が、自分たちが住むこの“地上向けのサービス”で稼がれている。つまり、“宇宙のお金のほとんどは、地球で回っている”というわけだ。

では、なぜあのイーロン・マスクは、ロケット打ち上げだけでなく、あれほど衛星インターネット「スターリンク」に力を入れるのか。

その理由こそが、宇宙ビジネスの最もダイナミックで、ロマンチックな現実を示している。

「衛星で稼いで、火星に行く」という壮大なプラン

イーロン・マスクがスターリンクに全力を注ぐ理由──それは、彼の最終目標が「火星移住」にあるからだ。

火星を目指すための超巨大ロケット「スターシップ」の開発には、天文学的な費用がかかる。そこで彼は、「衛星で稼いで、火星に行く」という壮大なプランを立てた。世界中の人々をインターネットで繋ぐスターリンク事業で、安定的かつ巨大な収益基盤を確立し、そこで得た利益のすべてを、スターシップの開発に再投資する。

実際に、2024年のSpaceXの総収益131億ドルのうち、82億ドルがスターリンクからのもの。打ち上げサービスの42億ドルを、すでに大きく上回っている。あの華々しいロケット打ち上げの実に66％は、自社の衛星ビジネスを支えるためのインフラ構築だったのだ。

つまり、自分たちがスターリンクでインターネットを使うたびに、間接的に火星移住計画に貢献している、ということになる。

僕たちの日常が、人類の夢を支えている

この構造を理解した瞬間、日常の風景が、全く違って見えてきた。

メガネ屋をやっていて、お客様がGPSで店を見つけて来店される。

ウルトラマラソンで、GPSウォッチを使って正確な距離とペースを測る。

家でYouTubeをサクサク見て、子どもたちがポケモンGOで遊び、天気予報で台風の進路を確認する──。

これら一つ一つの行動すべてが、宇宙産業を支えている。そして、その収益の一部が、次の宇宙開発へと再投資されていく。僕たちの日常的な行動が、火星移住という人類の壮大な夢を、現実に一歩ずつ近づけているなんて、なんてロマンチックな話だろう！

この「成長のループ」を理解すると、僕が夢見る2049年の火星移住も、より一層、現実的に感じられる。

地球でのスターリンク成功 → その収益でスターシップ開発 → 火星への輸送コストを劇的に削減 → 火星でも衛星インフラを構築 → 火星移住者向けのサービスが生まれる → さらなる宇宙開発へ…。

技術的には、すべて現在の延長線上にある。衛星通信、測位システム、観測データ──地球で培った技術を、火星という新しいフロンティアに応用するだけなのだ。

宇宙に支えられたアスリート

改めて考えてみると、自分たちの生活は、すでに宇宙に深く依存している。

朝起きてスマホを見る（通信衛星）、天気予報をチェックして（気象衛星）、車で店に向かう（GPS衛星）、海外のフレームメーカーと連絡を取り（通信衛星）、クレジットカードで決済する（衛星通信）。

人工衛星の3つの役割──通信、測位、地球観測──は、もはや電気や水道と同じ「日常インフラ」になっている。98兆円という巨大市場も、こう考えれば納得だ。

ウルトラマラソンを走っていても、宇宙の恩恵を強く実感する。GPSウォッチで距離とペースを正確に把握し、山奥で道に迷えば、緊急時にはSOSを衛星経由で送信できる。気象衛星のデータで現地の天候を予測し、レース戦略を立てる。

現代のウルトラランナーは、実は「宇宙に支えられたアスリート」ともいえるのかもしれない。頭上400キロの宇宙空間に浮かぶ人工衛星群が、地上の僕たちの足取りを見守っている。そして、その利用料の一部が、火星移住計画に再投資されている。走るたびに、人類の夢に貢献していることになるのだ。

SpaceXの物語は、「宇宙ビジネスの本当の主役は、地上にいる自分たちだ」ということを、何よりも力強く証明している。メガネ屋として、ウルトラランナーとして、そして2049年の火星移住を夢見る一人の人間として、この現実をもっと意識していきたい。

毎日の仕事、毎日の生活が、人類の宇宙進出を支えている。そして、その恩恵を受けながら、自分たちは次の時代を準備しているのだ。

ふと空を見上げれば、そこに自分たちの未来を支える衛星がある。そして2049年には、火星の赤い空にも、同じような光の点が浮かんでいるかもしれない。

Our Daily Lives Are Connected to the Dream of Mars—The Real Story of Space Business

“Space business has nothing to do with me, right?”

Perhaps a lot of people still think that. But the reality is that of the space economy, which swelled to about 98 trillion yen (approx. $630 billion) in 2023, over 70% is earned from “ground-based services.” In other words, “most of the money in space circulates here on Earth.”

But why does Elon Musk put so much effort into Starlink?

The reason Elon Musk is pouring all his energy into Starlink is that his ultimate goal is “Mars colonization.”

Developing the super-heavy-lift rocket “Starship” for Mars requires astronomical costs. So, he devised a grand plan: “Earn with satellites, go to Mars.” He would establish a stable and massive revenue base with the Starlink business, which connects people around the world via the internet, and reinvest all the profits into the development of Starship.

In 2024, of SpaceX’s $13.1 billion in total revenue, $8.2 billion came from Starlink, far surpassing the $4.2 billion from launch services. A staggering 66% of those spectacular rocket launches were, in fact, infrastructure construction for their own satellite business.

In other words, every time we use the internet on Starlink, we are contributing to the Mars colonization plan.

As an eyeglass shop owner, a customer finds my store using GPS.

As an ultramarathon runner, I measure my exact distance with a GPS watch.

Watching YouTube smoothly, playing Pokémon GO, checking the path of a typhoon on the weather forecast—all of these things support the space industry. And that revenue is reinvested into the next phase of space development. The idea that our everyday actions are supporting humanity’s dream of Mars colonization—what a romantic story!

Understanding this structure makes the 2049 Mars colonization feel more realistic.

Success of Starlink on Earth → Its revenue funds Starship development → Drastically reduces transport costs to Mars → Build satellite infrastructure on Mars too → Services for Mars colonists → Further space development.

Technologically, it’s all an extension of what we have now. Satellite communications, positioning systems, observation data—it’s just about applying the technology cultivated on Earth to Mars.

When I think about it again, our lives are already deeply dependent on space.

I wake up and look at my smartphone (communications satellite), check the weather forecast (weather satellite), head to the shop by car (GPS satellite), contact an overseas frame manufacturer (communications satellite), and make a credit card payment (satellite communications).

The three main roles of artificial satellites—communication, positioning, and Earth observation—have already become our daily infrastructure. Space infrastructure = daily infrastructure. The massive 98-trillion-yen market makes perfect sense.

Even when I’m running an ultramarathon, I feel the benefits of space. I track my distance and pace with a GPS watch, and if I get lost in the mountains, I can send an SOS via satellite. I predict the weather with data from weather satellites and form my race strategy.

Modern ultrarunners could perhaps even be called “athletes supported by space.” The cluster of satellites floating 400 kilometers above our heads watches over our footsteps on the ground. And a portion of the fees for using them is being reinvested into the Mars colonization plan. Every time I run, I’m contributing to humanity’s dream.

The story of SpaceX powerfully proves that “the real protagonists of space business are us here on the ground.” As an eyeglass shop owner, as an ultrarunner, and as one person who dreams of Mars colonization in 2049, I want to be more conscious of this reality.

Our daily work, our daily lives, are supporting humanity’s expansion into space. And while receiving those benefits, we are preparing for the next era.

If I look up, there are the satellites supporting our future. And in 2049, the same kind of satellites might be floating in the Martian sky.
