イーサン・ハントよりはマシ？トム・クルーズよりはマシ？『ミッション：インポッシブル／ファイナル・レコニング』

トム・クルーズ主演の「ミッション：インポッシブル」シリーズが、30年近い歴史を経て、ついに最終章を迎えるということで、遅ればせながら観に行ってきた。『ミッション：インポッシブル／ファイナル・レコニング』

このシリーズといえば、自分がメガネ屋だからというのもあるんですけど、やっぱり『M:I-2』でイーサン・ハント（トム・クルーズ）が指令を受ける、あのオークリーのサングラスが忘れられない。指令を受け取った後、サングラスをポイっと投げるとそれが空中で爆発して、お馴染みのオープニングテーマが流れ出す。あの流れがもう、カッコ良すぎて…。当時は『メガネは爆破するもの！』なんて、本気でワクワクしたもの。

そんな個人的な思い出もあるこのシリーズ。今回の最終章は、前作の直後から始まるAI「エンティティ」との最終決戦。壮大なスケールと圧倒的なアクションで、まさにシリーズの集大成にふさわしい、見ごたえのあるフィナーレだった。

で、今回この『ファイナル・レコニング』を観て、僕、ひとつ大きな発見があった。

それは、「こういう映画って、長距離ランとか、極地レースとか、何か過酷な挑戦をする前に観ると、絶対にいい効果がある」ということ。

映画では、トム・クルーズ演じるイーサン・ハントが、もう常人には考えられないような無理難題を、文字通り絶体絶命の状況で次から次へとクリアしていく。レースの前などに、ワンシーンでも見れば、これから自分が挑むレースの辛さや、仕事で直面している困難なんて、なんだかちっぽけなことに思えてくる。心の中で「まあ、イーサンよりはマシだよな」って（笑）。

自分史上どんなに冷たい海を泳ぐときも、「でも、イーサンは北極海に潜ってたしな…」とか考えたら、なんだか乗り越えられる気がしてくる。

そして、それと同時に、もう一つ思うのが、これを演じているトム・クルーズ自身のこと。実際の彼はもう62歳。その年齢であれだけの肉体的負荷に耐えている姿をスクリーンで見せつけられると、なんだか自分の限界に対する認識がガラッと変わる。「トムがあれだけやってるんだから、自分だってもう少し頑張れるはずだ」って、純粋に勇気をもらえる。

しかも、映画で描かれる極限環境スタント、例えば北極圏でのシーンや、プロペラ機での空中格闘は、そのほとんどを彼自身が演じているというから驚きだ。監督が「最後までトム本人がやる」「地球上で唯一、本当に全てをやる俳優」と語るように、マイナス40度の極寒の中を駆け抜けたり、時速225kmで飛ぶプロペラ機の翼にしがみついて格闘したり…。

つまり、今回もグリーンバックやボディダブルは使わず、安全のためのワイヤーは後でVFXで消す形だけれど、基本的にすべて本人が体現しているというのだ！！しかもそれがシリーズ４作目の『ゴースト・プロトコル』のころから徹底されているというのだ！ CGやスタントマンに頼らない、その“動きに嘘がない”リアリティが、画面からとんでもない迫力で伝わってくるのだ。

30年近く続いた壮大なシリーズが終わってしまうのは少し寂しいけれど、今回も最高のエンターテイメントだった。

爆発する指令サングラスに度肝を抜かれた若い頃の自分と、トム・クルーズの超人ぶりに自分の挑戦を重ねて、勇気をもらっている自分。このシリーズには、本当にいろんな形で楽しませてもらった。

さて、今一度シリーズを見返しながら、自分も次の「ミッション」に向けて、頑張ろう！

Better Than Being Ethan, Right? The ‘Mission: Impossible’ Finale and How to Exceed My Limits

The Mission: Impossible series, starring Tom Cruise, has finally reached its final chapter after a history spanning nearly 30 years, so I went to see it, albeit a little late. Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning.

Speaking of this series, maybe it’s because I’m an eyeglass shop owner, but I can never forget those Oakley sunglasses that Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) receives his mission on in M:I-2. After he gets the message, he casually tosses the glasses, they explode in mid-air, and the familiar opening theme starts playing. That whole sequence was just too cool… Back then, I was genuinely thrilled, thinking “So, glasses are things that explode!”

I have personal memories like that with this series. This final chapter is the concluding battle with the AI “Entity,” starting right after the previous film. With its grand scale and overwhelming action, it was a spectacular finale worthy of being the culmination of the series.

And, watching Final Reckoning this time, I had a big discovery.

It’s that “watching a movie like this before a long-distance run, a polar race, or some other grueling challenge definitely has a positive effect.”

In the movie, Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, clears one impossible challenge after another in literally life-or-death situations that are unimaginable for an ordinary person. If you watch even one scene before a race, the pain of the upcoming race or the difficulties you’re facing at work start to seem trivial. I think to myself, “Well, at least it’s not as bad as being Ethan,” lol.

Even when I’m swimming in the coldest sea of my life, if I just think, “But Ethan was diving in the Arctic Ocean…,” I feel like I can somehow overcome it.

And at the same time, another thing I think about is Tom Cruise himself, the one performing this role. He’s actually 62 years old. When you’re shown on screen a man of that age enduring such physical strain, your perception of your own limits completely changes. You get pure courage, thinking, “If Tom is doing that much, I should be able to push myself a little more.”

What’s more, it’s astonishing that he performs most of the extreme-environment stunts depicted in the film himself, like the scenes in the Arctic or the aerial combat on a biplane. As the director says, “Tom does it himself until the very end” and he’s “the only actor on Earth who truly does everything.” He runs through the extreme cold of -40 degrees, clings to the wing of a biplane flying at 225 km/h while fighting…

In other words, this time too, no green screen or body doubles were used; though there are wires for safety that are erased later with VFX, he basically embodies it all himself!! And get this—he’s apparently been doing this thoroughly since the fourth movie, Ghost Protocol! The reality of that “movement without lies,” which doesn’t rely on CG or stuntmen, comes through the screen with incredible force.

It’s a little sad that this grand series that has continued for nearly 30 years is ending, but this was top-tier entertainment once again.

The young me who was blown away by the self-destructing mission sunglasses, and the current me who gets a strange kind of courage by comparing my own challenges to Tom Cruise’s superhuman feats. I’ve truly been entertained by this series in so many different ways.

Alright, while rewatching the series one more time, I think I’ll get to work on my own next “mission”!
