ビジネス壊滅？バナナの“キャベンディッシュ化”？

世界中で愛され、朝のスムージーから子どものおやつまで大活躍のバナナ。

でも驚くことに、店頭に並ぶ可食用品種は実質キャベンディッシュ種ただ一つなんだそうだ。

単一品種栽培は管理が楽な反面、特定の病気が流行すると一気に全滅するリスクを抱えている。実際、いま東南アジアや中南米で猛威を振るう”パナマ病TR4″は、世界のバナナ供給を揺さぶりかねないと警戒されているらしい。

多様性がなければ、たった一つの脅威で倒れる。

これを知った時、ハッとした。これは農業に限らず、どんな組織・ビジネスにも通じる教訓だと感じる。

いま、うちはありがたいことに誠眼鏡店というメガネ屋を15年続けさせていただいている。でも、バナナの話を聞いて改めて思った。

変化にいつでも対応できる柔軟な体質でいなくては！と。

一つのことに特化するのは大切だけど、それだけじゃリスクが高すぎる。
バナナのように、一つの病気で全てが終わってしまう可能性がある。

そういえば、エベレストの時にこんな人がいた。

「この人、絶対登るな」

そう直感した登山者が何人かいた。彼らに共通していたのは、意思が鋼のように強いことだった。

でも、それ以上に印象的だったのは柔軟性だった。

天候が悪化すれば、迷わず下山する。
体調に異変を感じれば、すぐに判断を変える。
ルートに問題があれば、別の道を選ぶ。

状況にものすごく柔軟。

そして面白いことに、そんな人たちは仕事でももれなく成功していた。

バナナ畑でも、標高8,848mでも、そして銀座の店舗でも、求められるのは「意思の強さ」と「環境適応の柔らかさ」の両立なんだと思う。

鋼の意思と水のような柔軟性。

一見矛盾するようだけど、この両方を持っている人は最強。

メガネ屋を続けながらも、常に新しいことにアンテナを張っておく。
お客様のニーズが変われば、それに合わせて変化する。
時代の流れを読んで、必要なら大胆に方向転換する。

ただ、根本にある「メガネへの愛情。そしてお客様には最高のメガネ体験を！」という想いは絶対に曲げない。

自分の仕事や暮らしの中で”キャベンディッシュ化”している部分はないだろうか？

一つのやり方や一人のエースに頼り切っていないか？

15年間メガネ屋をやってきて分かったのは、変わらないものと変わるべきを見極める力が何より大切だということ。

メガネへの愛情は変わらない。
でも、その表現方法は時代と共に変わっていく。

バナナの単一栽培のリスクを反面教師にして、常に多様性を意識していたい。

変化を恐れず、でも芯はブレず。刻一刻と変わる現代、未来を見つめつつ、自分自身の柔軟筋を鍛え続けていきたい。

The Banana Crisis Taught Me This: Is Your Work Becoming a “Cavendish”?

Bananas: beloved worldwide, a star in everything from morning smoothies to children’s snacks.

But surprisingly, I learned that the edible variety lining our store shelves is practically just one type: the Cavendish.

While monoculture cultivation might be easier to manage, it carries the immense risk of being wiped out instantly by a specific disease. In fact, “Panama Disease TR4,” currently raging in Southeast Asia and Central and South America, is apparently feared to be a threat that could shake global banana supplies.

Without diversity, a single threat can bring everything crashing down.

When I learned this, it hit me. This isn’t just a lesson for agriculture; I feel it applies to any organization or business.

Thankfully, my glasses shop, “Makoto Gankyoten,” has been running for 15 years now. But hearing the banana story made me think anew.

We must have the flexibility to adapt to change at any time!

Specializing in one thing is important, but relying solely on that is too risky.

Like the banana, there’s the possibility that a single disease could end everything.

It reminds me of something from my Everest days.

There were a few climbers who I instinctively felt, “This person will definitely make it to the summit.”

What they all had in common was an iron will.

But what was even more impressive was their flexibility.

If the weather worsened, they’d descend without hesitation.

If they felt something amiss with their physical condition, they’d change their judgment immediately.

If there was a problem with the route, they’d choose another path.

They were incredibly adaptable to circumstances.

And interestingly enough, such people were, without exception, also successful in their professional lives.

Whether on a banana plantation, at an altitude of 8,848 meters, or in my shop in Ginza, I believe what’s required is the dual possession of “strength of will” and “softness of environmental adaptation.”

An iron will and a flexibility like water.

They might seem contradictory at first glance, but people who possess both are truly formidable.

While continuing to run my glasses shop, I always keep my antenna up for new things.

If customer needs change, I adapt accordingly.

I read the trends of the times and, if necessary, boldly change direction.

However, the fundamental passion—”my love for eyeglasses, and providing customers with the best possible eyeglass experience!”—is something I will never compromise.

Is there any part of my own work or life that is becoming “Cavendish-ized”?

Am I relying too much on a single method or a single star player?

Having run a glasses shop for 15 years, I’ve come to understand that the ability to discern what should not change from what must change is paramount.

My love for eyeglasses will not change.

But the way I express that love will evolve with the times.

Using the risk of banana monoculture as a cautionary tale, I want to always be conscious of diversity.

Don’t fear change, but don’t let your core waver. As the present moment changes constantly, I want to keep an eye on the future and continue to train my own “flexibility muscles.”
