Why We Need to Keep Taking Risks, No Matter Our Age
Today, I met up with a friend I hadn’t seen in a while, who’s the same age as me and runs his own business. His drive (harikata – the way he pushes himself/takes risks) is as incredible (hampanai – extraordinary/intense) as ever. Even though it’s been nearly 10 years since he started his company, far from playing it safe, he had the same intensity as if he were still in the startup phase.
And what about me? I realized acutely that I haven’t been taking risks lately. Choosing stability, avoiding making waves day to day. As a result, while I haven’t had any major failures, I also haven’t experienced any heart-pounding progress or striking changes. In other words, my life hasn’t really been moving lately.
It suddenly reminded me of words attributed to Mark Zuckerberg: “The biggest risk is not taking any risk.” In a world changing this rapidly, he suggested, avoiding risk is the only strategy guaranteed to fail. Even someone as successful as him doesn’t rest on his laurels; he continues to take on new challenges, like the massive investment in the metaverse, even while facing significant criticism.
Of course, as you get older, have a family, take on more responsibilities, and have more to lose, you inevitably become more cautious.
However, seeking stability doesn’t necessarily have to mean giving up on challenges. Taking risks doesn’t always mean betting everything recklessly. It can mean just taking one small step out of your comfort zone. Learning a new skill. Dipping your toes into an industry or community you didn’t know before. Isn’t it the accumulation of these “small challenges” that steadily moves life forward and enriches it?
The conversation with my friend served as a powerful reminder to myself, as I had been getting used to a comfortable stagnation disguised as stability. Indeed, no matter your age, if you don’t keep taking risks and challenging yourself, you lose vitality and stagnate.
So, I’ve decided. I’m going to try taking some more risks myself. I’m going to take a new step forward.
“Maintaining the status quo is the same as moving backward.” I want to carve these words into my heart anew. Instead of continuing to soak in the lukewarm bath (nurumayu – often implying complacency) of stability, I need to have the courage to move forward, even little by little, without fearing change. Perhaps that’s the simple yet certain secret to continuing to shine authentically, no matter how old you get.
