誠眼鏡というメガネ屋を新宿と銀座で営ませていただき１５年。

思えば１５年。多くの人が何かをはじめて、途中で挫折する理由は、テクニックや知識の不足ではなく、情熱の炎が消えてしまうから。最近とても強くそう思う。

自分で物事を始め続けていくことは、自分の価値観や理想を形にする作業。どんな世界に生きたいか、どんな喜びを届けたいか—それらを具現化する小さな世界を創り出すこと。それは言わば、自分だけのユートピアを作り上げていく営み。

この「小さな世界」を創る過程で、もちろん数多くの困難に直面する。資金繰り、人材の確保、競合…。ただ、本当の問題は外にあるのではなく、内側にある。それは情熱の火が消えること。

長く歩み続けるために必要なのは、自分の情熱を思い出せる時間を確保すること。例えば、朝一番にアイデアノートにイメージを描き込む時間。新サービスのプロトタイプを、一人こっそり深夜まで試作するひととき。どれも派手ではないけれど、自分の世界に新たな色を塗り込む「情熱の瞬間」だ。その瞬間を意識的に作り出すことで、理詰めだけでは得られないワクワクが身体中を駆け巡り、次の挑戦に向かう活力がわいてくる。

また、大切なのは、自分だけの「定義」を持つこと。他人の価値観に振り回されず、自分が本当に目指したいものは何かを見失わないこと。それが日々の情熱を守る盾となる。

自分がエベレストに挑戦したときを思い返すと、山頂に立つことより、その過程で見る景色や、限界を超える体験—そちらのほうが思い返せば「思い出」としては強烈に残っている。きっと仕事も同じだ。単なる売上や利益だけでなく、創造のプロセス自体を楽しめるかどうかが、長く続けられるかの鍵となる。

毎日が「自分だけの世界」を創る創造の日。その法則は、自分自身で決めることができる。誰かの真似ではなく、自分だけの理想を追い求めるからこそ、情熱の火は消えることなく燃え続ける。

今日も、自分の情熱を大切にしよう。それが、長い旅を支える、最も確かな燃料となるはずだから。

15 Years of Passion: A Journey

Fifteen years of running Makoto Eyewear in Shinjuku and Ginza.

Looking back over these fifteen years, I’ve come to realize that many people who start something new ultimately fail not because they lack technique or knowledge, but because the flame of their passion burns out. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

Continuously starting and pursuing your own ventures is the process of giving form to your values and ideals. It’s about creating a small world that embodies how you want to live and what joy you want to bring to others. It’s like building your own personal utopia in the real world.

Of course, in the process of creating this “small world,” you face numerous challenges: financing, staffing, competition… But the real problem isn’t external—it’s internal. It’s when the fire of passion goes out.

To continue walking this path for the long term, you need to secure time to reconnect with your passion. For example, time in the early morning to sketch images in your idea notebook. Or moments late at night when you secretly work on prototyping a new service. None of these are flashy, but they’re “moments of passion” that add new colors to your world. By consciously creating these moments, an excitement that logic alone can’t provide courses through your body, generating the energy to face your next challenge.

Another crucial element is having your own “definition” of things. Not being swayed by others’ values, but never losing sight of what you truly aim for. This becomes a shield that protects your daily passion.

When I think back to challenging Mount Everest, what remains most vivid in my memories isn’t standing at the summit, but the scenery along the way and the experience of pushing beyond my limits. Work is surely the same. More than sales or profits, the key to longevity is whether you can enjoy the creative process itself.

Every day is a day of creation, building your own world. You can determine its rules yourself. Because you pursue your own ideals rather than imitating others, the fire of passion continues to burn without extinguishing.

Today too, let’s cherish our passion. It is, after all, the most reliable fuel that supports our long journey.
