ケアンズでの思いがけない一日

朝日が昇る前、ケアンズの海岸線を走りながら、この予想外の寄り道に感謝していた。メルボルンからの”学びのない？ミス”が、こんな素敵な経験につながるとは。

メルボルンからの帰国便を逃し、昨夜23時、ケアンズに到着。初めての地だけれど、降り立った瞬間から肌に感じる湿度と暖かさに、リゾート感を覚えた。メルボルンの涼しさとは打って変わって、ここは完全に「泳げる気候」。

今朝は5時に起床。薄暗い中での朝ランは予想以上に爽快だった。驚いたのは、同じ時間に海岸沿いを走るランナーの多さ。お年寄りから若者まで、みんな朝の空気を楽しみながら体を動かしている。オーストラリアのランニング文化の根強さを感じた。

ランニング後はホテルに戻り、プールでの贅沢な時間。どうやらケアンズでは、格安ホテルでもプール完備が当たり前らしい。そしてとにかくまったりしている。水に浸かりながら「なるほど、日本人に人気な理由がわかる」と納得。

ゆったりとしたプールサイドでの朝食タイム。まるでハワイのようなリラックス感がある。しかも日本からの直行便があり、空港も小さくて混雑知らず。ハワイ島の空港を思わせる手軽さがいい。

便は11時40分発。9時までしか滞在できなかったけれど、この短い滞在でケアンズの魅力にすっかり取り憑かれてしまった。「もし今回の乗り過ごしがなかったら、一生ケアンズを訪れることはなかったかもしれない」と思うと、不思議な縁を感じる。

ケアンズ。実際に訪れてみると、そのリラックスした雰囲気と自然の美しさが最高。ジェットスターの格安便で直行できるなら、次回はもっとゆっくり滞在したい。

「4月1日の25:45」という存在しない時間の読み間違いが、私に新たな旅先との出会いをもたらした。時には計画通りにいかないことが、最高の思い出になることもある。

ケアンズ、そしてグレートバリアリーフ、また必ずこよう！

The Unexpected Gift of Cairns

As I ran along the Cairns coastline before sunrise, I found myself grateful for this unexpected detour. Who would have thought that my “never-learning mistake” from Melbourne would lead to such a wonderful experience?

After missing my flight home from Melbourne, I arrived in Cairns last night at 11 PM. Though it was my first time here, the humidity and warmth I felt the moment I stepped off the plane gave me instant resort vibes. Unlike Melbourne’s coolness, this place definitely has “swimming weather.”

I woke up at 5 AM this morning. The pre-dawn run was more refreshing than I expected. What surprised me was the number of runners along the shore at that hour. From elderly folks to young people, everyone was enjoying the morning air while exercising. I could feel the strong running culture in Australia.

After my run, I returned to the hotel for a luxurious time in the pool. Apparently in Cairns, even budget hotels come standard with pools. And everything is so relaxed here. While soaking in the water, I thought, “Now I understand why this place is so popular with Japanese tourists.”

Breakfast time by the poolside was delightful. There’s a Hawaii-like sense of relaxation here. Plus, there are direct flights from Japan, and the airport is small and uncrowded. It reminds me of the ease of Hawaii Island’s airport.

My flight departs at 11:40 AM. Although I only had until 9 AM to enjoy my stay, this brief visit has completely captivated me with Cairns’ charm. I can’t help but think, “If I hadn’t missed that flight, I might never have visited Cairns in my lifetime,” and I feel a strange sense of destiny.

I previously had a vague impression of Cairns as a “trendy tourist destination.” But after actually visiting, I found its relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty absolutely wonderful. If I can fly directly with Jetstar’s budget flights, I definitely want to stay longer next time.

My misreading of the non-existent time “25:45 on April 1st” brought me to discover a new travel destination. Sometimes, when things don’t go according to plan, they create the best memories.

Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, I’ll definitely be back!
