本日は台中。伊東豊雄氏の台中歌劇院の中の美しいショップ

昨日に引き続き友人に、今日は台中に連れて行っていただいた。まず、新幹線の駅がやたらと大きい。そして、ちょっとしたカルチャーショック。台北中央駅は広場のように開けていて、そこにみんな普通に座って飲食をしている。さらに、その中には家のない方が寝ていたりと、とても自由な空間。最近の日本ではなかなか見ない光景で、先日訪れたイタリアでもさすがに駅構内でこのような状況はなかったけれど、なんかこれはこれであり。

台中へは新幹線で約1時間。この新幹線は日本から導入されたものとのことで、乗り心地も快適。そして、台中に着くと街の雰囲気が穏やか。友人に聞くと、台中は台北のようにせかせかしていなくて、みんなまったりと過ごしているという。確かに、街の空気感がどこかゆったりとしている。そして、目に入るのは高級そうなマンションの数々。台北とはまた違った落ち着いた雰囲気が魅力的だ。

まず台中歌劇院の中に入っている友人のクラシコのショップをみせてもらった。まずこの劇場がまた素晴らしい。この建築は、日本の建築家伊東豊雄（Toyo Ito）氏によって設計されたもの。革新的な「曲面壁構造」直線や柱をほとんど使わず、流れるような有機的な空間を作り出していて、本当に美しい。建設には多くの技術的な挑戦があり、施工には約6年（2009年～2016年）を要したとのこと。伊東豊雄氏は2013年にプリツカー賞を受賞した世界的な建築家で、台湾では他にも「台南市立図書館」などのプロジェクトにも関わっているという。この美しい台中歌劇院に友人のブランド「クラシコ」は誘致されたというから、すばらしい！！

その後、もう１店舗、街のデパート内の友人のお店を見せてもらい、そこも素敵！台中歌劇院の美しさなどに感動しながら、またまた3食ともご馳走になってしまった。本当に至れり尽くせりの数日。して、なんていい国、台湾。

Discovering a New Side of Taiwan in Taichung

Following yesterday’s adventure, today my friend took me to Taichung. The first thing that caught my attention was the massive size of the high-speed rail station. And then, a bit of culture shock—Taipei Main Station is designed like a vast public square, where people casually sit and eat right in the open. Among them, some homeless individuals were resting as well, creating a very free-spirited atmosphere. This is something rarely seen in Japan today, and even during my recent trip to Italy, I didn’t witness anything quite like this. But somehow, it felt like it belonged there—it was just part of the city’s character.

The high-speed rail ride to Taichung took about an hour. The trains, originally introduced from Japan, provided a smooth and comfortable journey. Upon arriving, the city immediately felt calmer and more relaxed compared to Taipei. My friend mentioned that Taichung moves at a slower pace, and I could definitely sense that. The atmosphere was laid-back, and I noticed many high-end residential buildings throughout the city. It had a refined yet peaceful charm, quite different from the bustling vibe of Taipei.

Our first stop was my friend’s shop inside the Taichung National Theater. And wow, this theater was breathtaking! Designed by the renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito, this masterpiece features an innovative “curved wall structure”, avoiding traditional straight lines and columns to create a fluid, organic space. The construction process posed many technical challenges, taking nearly six years (from 2009 to 2016) to complete. Toyo Ito, a 2013 Pritzker Prize laureate, is also responsible for other notable projects in Taiwan, such as the Tainan Public Library. The fact that my friend’s brand, Classico, was invited to be part of this architectural gem is truly remarkable!

Later, we visited another of my friend’s stores inside a luxury department store, which was equally impressive! The stunning design of the Taichung National Theater left a lasting impression on me, and before I knew it, I had been treated to three incredible meals once again. I feel completely spoiled over these past few days.

Seriously—what a fantastic country Taiwan is!
