本日、ローマ20km。圧巻！無補強の二千年前のコンクリート建築！

今日はローマ。朝6時半に起きて、まずはひとりで朝ラン。だいたい10kmほど走って、主要な観光スポットをざっくりと下見。学生時代にバックパックで立ち寄ったことはあるものの、こうしてしっかり観光するのは実質今回が初めて。娘とは自転車で巡ろうかとも考えていたけれど、自分一人では問題ないものの、交通状況がやや危険そうなので歩きに切り替えた。実際、歩きでもまったく問題なく、むしろじっくり街を見られるからちょうどいい。結局、娘と一緒に10kmほど歩いたので、今日はローマの街を合計20kmほど移動したことになる。

ローマで個人的にいちばん衝撃を受けたのはパンテオン。古代ローマ時代にすべての神々を祀るために建てられ、今はカトリック教会として利用されている。2,000年近くも大きな補修なしで現存しているという事実がまず信じがたい！！しかも世界最古のコンクリート建築と言われ、直径と高さがおよそ43mと同じで成り立つドーム構造は、現代の建築技術者も驚くほどの完成度だと聞く。天井に空いたオクルスから雨が入っても床に排水システムがあるなど、当時の建築の知恵にはただただ感心。

そしてもちろんコロッセオ。コロッセオなくしてローマは語れない。コロッセオは、紀元72年頃に皇帝ウェスパシアヌスが建設を始め、息子のティトゥスの代で完成したと伝わる古代ローマ最大の円形闘技場。かつては剣闘士の試合や動物との格闘など、5万から8万人も入る巨大空間で繰り広げられていたというのだから、そのスケールに圧倒される。ここにグラディエーターがいたのか！！日中ももちろんよかったけれど、人もまばらな朝ランのときに見た、朝日を浴びてオレンジ色に染まるコロッセオの姿は忘れられない。娘はフォロ・ロマーノの遺跡に大興奮だったらしく、今度はどこにいこうかななんて言っているから、連れてきた甲斐があったなと思う。

ローマはどこを歩いていても気持ちがいい。ここは地下鉄（メトロ）で移動する選択肢もあるけれど、できるだけ地上を歩いたほうが街を味わえるからおすすめしたい。歴史的な建造物や遺跡が普通に街並みに溶け込んでいて、散策しているだけで「やっぱりここは永遠の都なんだ」と実感させられる。今回、ローマも短い滞在だけれど、必ずまたゆっくりと訪れたい。古代の偉業が現代まですんなり受け継がれているこの街は、本当に奥が深くて魅力的だと改めて思った一日だった。

Today in Rome: 20 km on Foot! Astonishing 2,000-Year-Old Concrete Architecture with No Reinforcements!

Today was all about Rome. I woke up at 6:30 in the morning and started with a solo run, covering about 10 km to get a quick overview of the major sights. Although I’d passed through Rome with a backpack during my student days, this was effectively my first time doing any serious sightseeing. I considered exploring by bike with my daughter, but since I wouldn’t be alone and the traffic here can be a bit hairy, we decided to walk instead. It turned out to be a great choice, because walking let us really see the city up close. In the end, I walked another 10 km with my daughter, so I covered about 20 km in Rome today.

The place that impressed me the most was the Pantheon. Originally built in ancient Roman times to honor all the gods, it’s now used as a Catholic church. The fact that it has stood for nearly 2,000 years without any major restoration work is almost unbelievable. It’s also said to be the oldest concrete building in the world, and its dome—measuring roughly 43 meters in both diameter and height—is an engineering marvel that even modern architects find amazing. There’s an opening in the ceiling called the oculus, which allows rain to fall right inside, but the water is cleverly drained by a system built into the floor. It’s hard not to be awestruck by that level of ancient ingenuity.

And of course, Rome wouldn’t be complete without the Colosseum. Construction began around 72 AD under Emperor Vespasian and was completed during the reign of his son, Titus, making it the largest amphitheater of ancient Rome. They used to stage gladiator battles and fights with wild animals there, packing in somewhere between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators—imagine the scale! Visiting in the daytime was great, but my favorite moment was during my morning run, when I saw the Colosseum bathed in the orange glow of sunrise. My daughter was thrilled by the ruins of the Roman Forum (Foro Romano), and she’s already talking about what we’ll see next time, so I’m glad I decided to bring her along.

Rome is a wonderful city to explore on foot. There’s a Metro system you can use, but I highly recommend staying above ground whenever possible—it’s just more enjoyable. Historic buildings and ruins blend seamlessly into the cityscape, and it’s easy to see why people call this the “Eternal City.” My time here is short, but I definitely plan to come back. It’s clear that the ancient achievements on display in Rome continue to resonate right into the present, reminding me just how deep and fascinating this city really is.
