「デナリ山」再びマッキンリーに？？？名前の力

「デナリ」アラスカにある米最高峰の山だ。自分自身も７大陸最高峰を目指していた際にデナリに挑戦し、登頂に成功した。その経験は、登山方法などの制限から、自分にとってなかなか独特な体験だったけれど、山の美しさは本当に息をのむほどだった。

最近、トランプ大統領が就任と同時に、山の名前を「デナリ」から「マッキンリー山」に戻すことを検討しているという報道を目にした。そこで不思議に思った：なぜこの山の名前がそれほど重要なのか？

自分がデナリに挑戦したのは2017年。標高6,190メートル（20,310フィート）のこの山は、その極端な気象条件と、クレパス、長期遠征での登山方法が独特な山。ただ、デナリは本当綺麗。南極も空気がまるで別の惑星のようだったけれど、デナリはデナリで別世界。ここでみた朝焼けと夕焼けはまるで、天国のようだった。

この山は、何世紀にもわたって先住民アサバスカンの人々によって「デナリ」（文字通り「高いもの」）と呼ばれてきた。それが19世紀後半、当時アメリカの大統領候補（後に大統領）であったウィリアム・マッキンリーを称えるために、「マッキンリー山」という名前が公式に使われ始めた。その後、2015年、オバマ政権のもと、連邦政府は「デナリ」を山の名前として公式に認め、先住民の文化とアイデンティティを尊重する広範な運動を強化。

そんな「デナリ」をトランプ大統領が再び「マッキンリー山」に名称を戻そうとするのは、共和党の歴史を強調し、オバマ政権時代に決定されたことに反対したいからだと言われている。しかし、この動きは多くの先住民グループや地元住民にとって極めてデリケートなものであり、強い反対や対立を煽る可能性がある。

アサバスカン族が何世紀にもわたって「デナリ」という名称を守り、尊重してきたことを考えると、「マッキンリー山」に戻すことは彼らの文化や歴史に対して失礼に思える。重要なのは、どの名前を使うかではなく、その名前にまつわる歴史や価値観、文化の背景を認識し、尊重することなのだろう。

名前とは決して単なるラベルではなく、そこに織り込まれた歴史や文化を象徴するものなのだ。個人的には、「デナリ」が本来の名前なのだから、そのままであるべきだと思っている。今回の件を通じて、名前やそこに込められた文化、アイデンティティを尊重することの大切さを、改めて考えさせられた。

Denali, located in Alaska, is the highest mountain in the United States. When I was pursuing the Seven Summits, I challenged myself to climb Denali and successfully reached the peak. The experience was quite unique due to the limitations and methods involved in climbing it, but the mountain’s beauty was absolutely breathtaking.

Recently, after President Trump took office, I saw reports that he might revert the mountain’s name from “Denali” back to “Mount McKinley.” It made me wonder: Why is the name of this mountain so significant?

I climbed Denali in 2017. At 6,190 meters (20,310 feet) above sea level, it’s known for its extreme weather, numerous crevasses, and the special style of extended expeditions required to summit. But no matter the challenges, Denali is truly stunning. Having also experienced Antarctica, which feels like another planet, I can say Denali is its own separate world. The sunrises and sunsets there were nothing short of heavenly.

For centuries, the indigenous Athabascan people have called this peak “Denali,” literally meaning “the high one.” Then in the late 19th century, the name “Mount McKinley” began to be officially used, honoring William McKinley, who was then a presidential candidate (and later became President). In 2015, during the Obama administration, the federal government officially recognized “Denali” as the mountain’s name, strengthening wider efforts to respect indigenous cultures and identities.

Now, President Trump’s reported plan to rename Denali back to “Mount McKinley” is said to reflect a desire to emphasize Republican history and oppose decisions made during the Obama years. However, this move is extremely sensitive for many indigenous groups and local residents, potentially stirring strong opposition and conflict.

Considering how the Athabascan people have spent centuries preserving and revering the name “Denali,” reverting it to “Mount McKinley” seems disrespectful to their culture and history. What really matters is not so much which name is chosen, but rather acknowledging and respecting the historical, cultural, and ideological background the name represents.

A name is never merely a label; it symbolizes the history and culture woven into it. Personally, since “Denali” is the original name, I believe it should remain as it is. This episode has reinforced for me the importance of honoring a name—and the culture and identity tied to it—by truly understanding what it represents.
