The Life of Someone Who Chooses to “Become” Rather Than Just “Want to Become”
At 46, I’ve met countless people from all walks of life across the globe. But one of the most critical distinctions I’ve observed when it comes to realizing dreams is the difference between wanting to become something and deciding to become it. Everyone dreams, saying, “I want to be this” or “I want to be that.”
Take, for example, Ichiro Suzuki or Shohei Ohtani. These are athletes who, from an early stage, made the clear decision that they would become what they aspired to be. It’s this firm conviction of “I will become this” that I find almost artistic.
Shohei Ohtani, for instance, spent the night after winning the Japan Series not with his family or friends but practicing his batting. Even when Ohtani was asked to be a judge on the New Year’s Eve TV program Kōhaku Uta Gassen, he agreed on the condition that he would have access to a place where he could continue his practice during the New Year holidays. Baseball is always at the center of his life.
I experienced this same kind of unwavering determination firsthand during the 250km Gobi Desert Marathon. The six-day stage race had ended, and in the middle of the night, around 3 a.m., I heard a noise and woke up. To my amazement, a top athlete Mafune, instead of resting, was repeatedly running up and down the hotel stairs. Witnessing this, I was reminded of the incredible strength of will these top performers possess—the absolute commitment to see things through. I’ve encountered many such scenes in races and mountains since then.
This, indeed, is the life of someone who chooses to “become” rather than just “want to become.”
